That song they play to get the fans going before Kick Off is fantastic. The way they build it up is really impressive. The song is very hypnotic. It might be their club song because there was the odd reference to Besiktas in there. Special mention also to the rabid dog song..the one where it sounds like they are all barking (at the moon or something). As for generosity it's in their culture. I met a Turkish friend On Tuesday who is 20 years younger than me and earns about 15% of my salary but he was absolutely insistent that I was his guest and he would pay. I have been overseas long enough to know when to accept other people's offers. He must have spent £60GBP on me for food and beer. That's the way the Turks are.

We were drinking with the head of the German Carzi who flies over from Munich for every home game. He is unable to visit the UK again after a fracas with Liverpool fans. Possibly mellowed with age but he and his friends were as kind and friendly a group you could meet.
I thought the coordination of their singing from different parts of the stadium was amazing and worth going for that alone.

Still in Istanbul ready for the trip home tomorrow. The experience was like nothing ever witnessed before. From the Bubble Bar just of the main strip, being walked a good mile and half through the centre of Istanbul singing the full repotoire was a sight to behold. The atmosphere in the ground with 30k plus baying home fans absolutely amazing. They were relentless for the whole game other than the 15 mins between our goal and halftime. Terrific banter between us and the closest section, with applause and souvenirs being exchanged at full time.
Their vocal support was immense, continual and co-ordinated, one guy orchestrating the lower tier and one the upper, these guys never saw a kick, their job was to get the crowd going. They even did stand to stand chanting with one shouting black, then the other shouting white (Besitas colours) told by a Turkish friend of a friend. Loads of stuff you'd never get anyway with in an English ground.
As the owner of our hotel said this morning, in Brasil football is a religion, in Turkey it's more than that.
A once in a lifetime, I was there moment.

Got back about two hours ago. Phenomenal experience over there, truly fantastic. The Besiktas fans were incredible, it was amazing to hear them and how in time they were with each other. All very friendly, swapping shirts and scarfs at the end of the game, mutual applause for each set of fans at the end too.
Swapped my shirt with a lad outside the ground was probably my personal highlight of the trip, it was a great moment. He was made up about receiving a Stoke shirt, and likewise with me!
Thank you to Besiktas, Istanbul and Turkey as a country.

I think the Carsi are their hooligans, a lot anyway, but because they won and we didn't cause any aggro, they took us under their wing. It was funny when we went past a load of Stokies, we were surrounded by Besiktas fans who had been buying us drinks all night, they must have thought what the fuck ;D

We nicked into the Besiktas stadium on Tuesday through a side door and got plenty of us displaying our flag inside the empty stadium...

Yeah, we thought we'd have a look around for a different pub, ended up walking into this one, oblivious to their fans, and got made to stay with them for the rest of the night ;D About 12 of us at that table, and the rest of the bar watching us singing Besiktas songs (or attempting ;D) and buying us pints, giving us fags and food! They didn't really have bars as such, apart from the Irish one, they were all Cafe bars really.

Got back last night from three days Ill never forget.
Having been a bit worried about knives the only thing I was threatened with was cameras as they all wanted photos taken with Stoke fans. As for their crowd, AMAZING, ive never seen a crowd like that before and I doubt I ever will again. Plenty of threats during the game from the closest section but as soon as the final whistle went it was mutual applause and shirt swapping.
Two cracking nights at the James Joyce Irish bar and Bubbles, singing outside till 3 am, plenty of Besiktas fans joining in and not a policeman in site.
If you ever get a chance to a game there dont miss it.
Big Respect to Besiktas

Our entire trip to Turkey was perfect, despite the result.
I felt more threatened in Newcastle/Hanley on Friday/Saturday night than at any time in Istanbul. Really friendly people who only wanted to talk about football. The waiters in our Hotel were looking at our match tickets and were green with envy, as though they were winning lottery tickets. They all had big grins on their faces at breakfast the morning after, but it was handshakes all round!
The atmosphere in the ground was like nothing I've ever seen. Hajduk Split was electric, Bestikas was nuclear!
Every single one of their lot was 100% fanatical and the two blokes in the white tops in the separate tiers to our right controlled their stand with military precision.
I think if we'd kept 11 men on the pitch we could have held out for a draw.
The biggest problem with finishing 2nd is that the way leg of the next round is during term time and the home leg is in half term. This may be a problem as I've promised one of my kids that I'll take him but to say that his Mum is not keen is an under-statement!
The Tour continues and the chances of us having a new kitchen in the forseeable future are diminishing the longer we stay in the competition!

Got back home at 11pm last night having flown out on Monday morning from Luton. I'd been to Istanbul a couple of times before and the locals are just as friendly now as they were then. Some locals really went out of their way to make us welcome. A young lady diverted from whatever she was planning to do to take us through the maze of side streets off Istiklal (their version of Oxford Street) to find our hotel. Then the following day when we were trying to work out the Metro/Tram system to get to the other side of the Golden Horn to do some sight seeing a bloke we bumped into took the time to explain how and where to get tokens for the trip, where to catch the funicular and which tram to catch at the bottom of the funicular. If you've only experienced the touristy, beach part of Turkey you'll be delighted with Istanbul - a crazy city with wonderful people who could not be more friendly - even when they were trying to sell me a brand new "antique" kilim which dropped during haggling from £8,000 to £200 before I managed to persuade him what I told him at the start - that I did not want to buy. We saw: The Basilica Cistern (where part of from Russia with Love was filmed), the Blue Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar and the museums of archeology and egyptology - sadly the main part of the Sultan's Palace was closed. The game will stick in my memory for ever - not for the football but for the crazy, wonderful crowd. OK they had a few nutters who threw stuff (don't most clubs?) but there were nearly 30,000 of the craziest noisiest fans I have ever seen - it was like watching a big orchestra perform for a conductor. If Besikas do get a new ground (which they are planning to do) I hope they build on the same site as the existing stadium which is in a superb position at the foot of a hill on the shore of the Bosphorus - magical place. If you get the chance to go to Istanbul - go - you'll love it even if there isn't a football match involved. The food is great as well, with everything from Turkish to Indian to Chinese, Italian and even English. Best away days of my life. I need to cut down the 200 photos I took to around 100, but I should have them online today or tomorrow and I'll put a link to the Picasa album on here. EDIT - here are the photos - if you use the slide show alter the interval from 3 seconds to about 10 seconds if you want to read the captions. picasaweb.google.com/105263356362936614149/Istanbul2011

Well as a few know on here i have links in Turkey with owning property.
Seems they were delighted and impressed withe Stokies over their.I posted this thread to them. Heres one response.
I've shared it with my husband Ferhan (and his friends) on Facebook - they'll be well-impressed with the positive comments from the Stokies. Ferhan is admin of a BJK forum and a member of the BJK club, he'll probably send the links to quite a few people. He's not active within Carsi (due to living in Izmir) but he's good friends with the organisers and if there's anything he can do to help keep this respect betwen Stoke and Besiktas fans going forever he will.
Would be great to have a football exchange programme. I feel so proud after reading those threads!
Thanks for sharing,

did they do that thing where the whole crowd goes silent at kick off then they basically go mental afterwards ? yes they did, that big youth Carsi went on the pitch and did the sssssssshhhhhh one two three and then they went mental ! never experienced anything like that in my life and probably never will. Incredible Spoke a Stokie after the game and he said he bumped into the guy in the white tracky top, said he was fecking huge and he shit himself We got taught the words to loads of their songs in the pub after the game, obviously can't remember any of them, but I was given the latest Besiktas home top by a local (well smart Adidas one), amazing people

This video gives a good story of the day, the passion of the Besiktas fans and has a cameo appearance from a few Stokies.
Notice how they all wear colours - really adds to the spectacle I think. It's not unusual to see about half of the fans at English games wearing no colours of any kind.
