3am in a bar in istanbul and just reflecting in today. Notwithstanding a pretty tepid performance by our second team, tonight was nothing short of the most amazing experience in my football supporting career.

Even when getting pasted on the pitch, theyu carried in singing enthusiasticly. Besiktas were OK up until we scored at home, then went quieter and quieter.

Is this possibly to do with the fact that the majority of them would have been UK citizens rather than dyed in the wool fans who had travelled from Turkey?

Just about to leave Luton airport. What a fantastic last 30 hours or so. The flight back was almost all stoke. The highlight for me had to be when we came out of a bar near Taksim sq around 6ish, expecting to be swamped by Besiktas fans, but when we turned the corner to the main street, there was a stoke flag amongst the crowds in the distance with chants of 'we are stoke'. A group of about 100 or so being escorted by police on bikes, then more and more of us just kept appearing on the walk down to the ground. I shall never forget that, absolutely bloody brilliant. Fantastic support.

It really was an amazing experience.
To give them their fair due, the Besiktas fans, indeed all the locals, were top class throughout our entire stay.
There was a lot of respect being shown at the end of the game as well. Mutual applause all around.
Just wanted to say well fine to the team as well. Below strength and half of them playing out of position but until the red card I thought we were going to win!

Still in istanbul, flying back tomorrow morning. Great day to follow a great night. Been called out on the street several times today by Besiktas fans wanting to shake hands and chat about the game. Suspect had Stoke knocked them out with a dubious injury time penalty things might have different.
However Istanbul is a great city with passionate and genuinely friendly fans.

Yep, great couple of days. People were great all round, great atmosphere in the stadium and we did alright with the team we had out, but once Upson went the writing was on the wall.

Hi I was a neutral at your game with Besiktas last night. I'm a Huddersfield Town fan, but i'm living turkey now' really been missing live football so nipped down to watch your game and thought you might be interested in a neutrals view of it. The game: I thought it was a really good game up until Upson got himself sent off. I was in the Besiktas end up on the top tier, opposite end to the Stokies support, I had no idea if it was a penalty from there, but the Stoke players did not seem to dispute it. After that point the extra man told and Besiktas's slick passing told and it was one way traffic. Beforehand though, it had been really good. Stoke we sent defensively, everyone knew their job, you let them have it in the centre but shut them down once they came into the final 3rd. You then tried create quick counterattacks that were successful. you should have made it 2 when you pressured their goalie/centreback and the ball nearly bounced in. The Fans and the Atmosphere. I found the whole atmosphere intense but very friendly. I didn't notice any agression to the Potters fans and besiktas were mainly singing their songs, bouncing up and down and cheering their team on. I felt not threat to your boys. Added to that when I was going in I was chatting to the locals and they asked if I was a stoke fan ( I am Town through and through), but I think they would have welcomed me even if I had been ( as long as I didn't make comments about their mothers! ) What was totally out of order and also not in the general feel and atmosphere of the game was the pelting of Pennant. It has no place in the game. Is it a southern European thing (Italy, spain, greece etc). Anyhow the game in no way felt like a "welcome to hell" type of atmosphere. Afterwards everyone seemed friendly enough, the Stoke fans were held behind for 30 mins I think, but this is standard parctise at big games. Finally a note on the Stoke fans. A good amount of fans a I heard you sing a few times from the other end of the ground. you did you club proud to get out to the heart of Istanbul for a mid week game. I hope you all got back safe. [EDIT: you had a decent amount of flags and good to see St'Georges cross on display] If you return book early on easyjet and catch the bus into Kadikoy from the airport, then get a ferry over to Kabatas ( its where the actual ground is rather than Besiktas which is a 10 min walk up the road. Failing that get a dolmus over to Basiktas and walk down. all the best Ben ( and leave off Jordan Rhodes, he's going nowhere till the summer)

What an amazing experience. Not one iota of trouble (although it could have been different had we won), and their fans are absolute class, very welcoming.
We ended up walking up a street of bars after the game, just decided to go into one, ended up spending the whole night with a group of them, singing and getting wankered, and wankered did we get, they kept buying us beers, not just our group but passers by!
Amazing, never felt anything like it.

just got back from istanbul and once again was mega impressed with the friendship that the locals have offered us . As in the other games they wanted to get involved with us in the bars and have the craic with us.The fans in the ground were truly awesome the noise and the co ordination of it all was something you could only appreciate by being there, and even if there was a megaphone choreographing it so what , it was still awesome fantastic support from us stokies as well ,everybody behaved , i think , and enjoyed the hospitality on offer. Top trip .Still enjoyed Kiev more though to be honest .

It was certainly another unbelievable trip. Officially I believe there was just over 900 stokies there. I would go as far as to say it wa4 arguably one of our best ever shows of support.
Their support really dud have to be seen to be believed as well. Europe just gets better and better.
Roll on Feb! Happiest of happy days!

I concur with Crazy Potters view! We were sitting in a bar half way down the hill from Taksim square when a large group of Stoke in full voice (City are top of the league) marched down the road! It was unbelievable! This is Istanbul i thought, absolutely amazing!
