come on northstokie, dont you think thats a bit OTT? the guy wasnt top rate but always gave 100%, and remember he hasnt been fully fit of late, and he gave it all against walsall when returning after 3 months injured and hadnt even had a reserve game.
Give the guy a break. We've had far worse players pull on a stoke shirt.

Agreed wardrobe monster, but if you read now we'd released him, I doubt anyone would be bothered.

Yep, time to be positive right now. we'll still need Paul Williams in future cases such as injuries and suspensions affecting the squad. No real need to slaughter the guy... though I will admit that I was never entirely comfortable with him at the back!

Taggart, Owen, Hill, Thomas. 4 players to fill 2 positions plus Hall if you include him. We'd need a pretty drastic injury situation to need him! At least it could leave a bit more money for players!

He could go out on loan I suppose but the bloke has made an effort when he's played. However, with Gerry back, we need a central defender alongside him with pace. Thommo has this but I'm not sure about Clint....every time he breaks into a gallop he gets injured Compare the over supply of centre backs and left wingers with our dearth of central midfielders and the situation gets confusing.

Angescfc pretty much sums it up for me.
Isn't Williams on a 2 year contract? He's 75% through his first year and I wished I could say that he's beginning to look the part, but he isn't.

Northstokie, weren't you behind the 'Iwelumo Out' repeated posts as well? I don't know why some people have this lynch mob mentality, he's here now, if he plays it means that we've probably got no-one else and it hardly helps if you get people booing him when he does play.

I don't like Williams, well not as a player i don't think he's good enough though i'll give him 100% supports whilst he's with us!

He needs to build his fitness up and he'll be a useful squad player, okay to come in for the odd game.He missed pre-season training at Southampton and for a player of his age and " build" it's very hard to get fit during a season as has been proved by him picking up niggling muscle injuries. Our squad isn't big enough to lose experienced cover and Owen isn't First Division quality yet.

slangking - yes I was, weren't you the one behind slagiging off Nige?
I don't see the point in carrying dead wood, Iwelumo is not good enough to play for us, are you telling me that when he gets the ball in front of goal you are optimistic he will score? He did a job in the 2nd but we don't need him.
Pulis has said time and time again that he will only get players in who are better than what we have, can you tell me that when Williams has players running at him that you don't whince? I know Styles had it in for us against Palace but Williams was absolutely shocking, he does not add anything in my opinion and he is surplus to requirements, his wage which I would imagine is at the higher end could well be used to procure another midfielder. The very fact that he had two games than we sign a CB speaks volumes, TP just wasn't confident playing him, simple as that.....

I think it's more of a case of how do you get rid of a player? Williams is only 1/4 of the way into a two year contract and must be on an okay wage coming from the Premiership. We've cancelled player contracts before although in fairness they've run for longer than Williams' current deal (Stefan Thordarson, JVD etc) Souleymane Oulare's contract was obviously cancelled after nine months although with the injuries and the reported very high wages involved there it was important to get him off the wage bill.
My guess is Williams will remain at the club for the rest of the season, being a squad player who'll we'll either release sometime next season or even try as a makeweight in a transfer deal (wasn't he mentioned in a swap for Marvin Andrews)
Like Ange says, if we have an option of an old head (Taggart) two central defenders coming into their peak years (Thomas and Hill) and a young player (Gareth Owen) then that's a fair quota of options in Division One (add to this Clarkey, Hall and Halls can all cover in emergencies, and other reserve players like Wilkinson, Keogh and Cartwright coming through the ranks)
If Williams is to remain with us, which looks likely for the time being, then nothing would make me happier for him if he comes good, although again looking at what we have available above he might be a little out of the picture behind some players (when everyone is fit)

i think some of the comments about williams are quite unfair.
1. ade is now a stoke hero. ok forget last season, i mean this season, had ade been pushed straight into the first team without a thought would he be where he is at the moment, playing like he is. well there is proof that he would not main examples being leicster and palarse. willo did not get 2 months to ween his way into the side, he was thrown into the deep end.
2. he supposedly spilt from his wife just after he joined. this may not be true, just something i have heard. if this is true it is bound to affect his game.
3.he had not played for 2 years, and also had no pre-season. HOW COULD HE BE EVEN 20% MATCH FIT
ok, maybe i am defending him a little too much but after he got injured for 3 months, TP has said without even a reserve game, Stoke needed him when taggart left, and he did not cry off he said go get me a shirt and for that i have a lot of time for the guy.
COME ON WILLO PROVE EM WRONG!!

Williams was a class player at Coventry and Southampton. He needs fitness, basically we shouldnt have signed him when he wasnt fit. He was thrown straight into the side when Ade was given time to get fit. He has made mistakes. When he then got injured he wasnt allowed to recover fully before being played again. As we were desperate.
Some of you lot make me SICK with your attitude to certain players. He has had some good games and some bloody awful games. Lets see what he is like when fully fit.

I have to agree with BFB and have said the exact same things before. Williams has been playing as well as Thommo but has been the scapegoat that some people need when thing don’t quite go to plan. We need to get behind the team and not be jumping on the players backs at every opportunity. The re-arrival of Taggart will create competition in the team and hopefully give Willo some time to get fit and show us what he is capable of. Gouranga.
