Rob When we were in Japan,I don`t think any team really stood out and I thought we had a chance. But I remember playing Brazil and Scolari just took the piss. The bloke was and is clueless IMO we will have to agree to disagree. Perhaps it`s something to do with the fact I never wanted him in charge from day one. I think it is Eddy, because you're clearly not prepared to be objective about it. Against Brazil we were ok until we fell behind, but Brazil were deserved winners of that world cup and we had done pretty well in the tournament despite having injuries and a tough group. Could it be that your problem is actually more to do with the fact that he's one of them dirty foreign types? Who have been the good managers if Sven was and is clueless? Don`t think we have had one since Robson to be honest, and as some have said you can`t blame Sven for taking the daft money he was offered. I thought Redknapp should have had the job when Sven got it. I am one for an Englishman managing England. The same goes for all countries doing the same. We go with our own and stand to be judged on that.

I think that's fair enough and while I don't like Redknapp, he's thoroughly earned the chance to take the job on. Even Robson wasn't that great when you look at his whole tenure in the job. Terrific club manager (one of the very best) but very much a mixed bag as England manager.

He was dead unlucky at Italia 90 To an extent. It could be argued that he was lucky in that we got a fairly kind draw all the way through until the semis. We played some great stuff, but the players were a lot keener on the sweeper system that worked so well than he was, and it took a bunch of them going to him to persuade him to go along with it (something similar happened to reverse our fortunes in his other decent tournament in Mexico in '86). Great memories though. The tournament that got me into football.

He was dead unlucky at Italia 90 He was, but also very unlucky in Mexico `86 and Euro `88. What goes around comes around in football, and Bobby Robson will go down as a good England manager for me.

Didn't we get butt-fucked at Euro '88 and lose every game? We started Mexico '86 abysmally and it took a player revolt to get Robson to change tactics that weren't working.

We went into Euro 88 as the favourites to win the tournament after hammering every team we played in the qualifiers. Once we got to the finals, we lost the most ridiculously one sided game I`ve ever seen 0-1 to Ireland, and more than matched the eventual winners, Holland in the second match - hitting the woodwork no less than three times. We did lose every game, but to say we were butt fucked is ludicrous. Like I said, we were very unlucky with the same group of players who went on to finish fourth in the world cup two years later.

I don't quite see how you can "unluckily" lose every single game. The table doesn't lie. We played very well (in some games) at Italia '90, rode our luck but were one of the few bright spots of the tournaments.

Italia 90 sums it up. We scrape through then as soon as we face a team ith genuine aspirations to win the tournament we get knocked out courageously. And when you get knocked out courageously you are knocked out.
England haven't been good enough to win a trophy since 1966. And the rest of the world talks of a draw fixed to suit the hosts and vebue switching to give England an advantage.
Sven did well with an average group of players. Good standard for the Premier league but when you compare them with the rest of the world they are average. Football is culture driven and what we do doesn't lead to international success.
