The guy is a fucking rock in our back four. One day people will realise that we have the best defender in the country playing for us instead of being brain washed by the media. There is this perception that if someone plays for Manure or Chelsea then they must be be better than what we've got. Ryan is was immense tonight as he has been all season. He doesn't carry the ball 30 yards unchallenged before knocking it 10 yards sideways or beat 2 players before leaving himself out of position. He defends and get tackles, blocks and headers where it matters!!

Your right numpty he's a defender that defends! Bollocks on the line every match! Him or rio pouncing around I know who I prefer! Who cares if he can't ping a ball 60 yards or go running with the ball, the simple thing is if we don't concede we don't lose!

Might have taken this thread seriously had you not said that he's the best defender in the country.
That's just being silly.

Him and Jones look good for the future CB pairing for England...
Jones as the ball-playing Rio type and Ryan as the Terry tough tackling masterdon.
Stick Smalling at RB

good defender, perfect for us and a rock. But no where near best in the country though and won't play regularly for England because he is not good enough on the ball, his use of the ball is not even Premiership average standard

You've basically just labelled him as 'average'. He's twice as good as Cahill at defending yet because Cahill's got this reputation of being like Beckenbauer he gets praised like he's world class when, in fact, he's a crap defender. His defensive displays thus far have been imperious. If he can't get in the England squad after his start this season then he never will.

If the money grabbing Italian cunt picked his sides solely on merit, then he should be a shoe in for the next England squad.
He won't be of course.

Ryan is a top class defender but next time they play together watch the difference when he has the ball at his feet and when Upson has the ball.
Unfortunately at this stage of his career Ryan is limited if not poor when he has the ball. Upson every time I have seen him since he arrived has been beautifully composed and his passing is as good as the best midfielders. He actually starts attacks.
I am eating a lot of humble pie here because I thought he was overrated when at West Ham but have changed my opinion totally.

Ryan is a proper English defender.
Unfortunately, you have to be a proper defender and a fucking genius with the ball at your feet to be an international defender nowadays. Bollocks.

Ryan is a great CB, good enough for any of the big 4 (or 5 or 6) right now, probably not. Therefore he is just about the best CB we could hope for & so lucky us and lucky him

He's one of the best defenders around and for me the best of our 4. He gets on with things quietly and effeciently, just as it should be. He's quick, an expert tackler and how many times does a ball come in to our box and get cut out by him in some way shape or form? It's not luck, it's a fantastic reading of the game and furious commitment.
But as stated, he's not very good in possession and it will always hamper his chances of progressing. Hopefully that will mean he stays with us for a few more years!

I, for one, won't mind having to compare them each week, if fit and available. They look an extremely complimentary pair with Upson's composure added to Ryan's excellent, as yet more rugged defending. A righty and a lefty, too! I'm sure that playing along Upson will bring the more composed side of Ryan's game on no end. Already is, IMO.

Ryans on a good run of form at the moment. If we compare him to last season he was a bit of a liability and the season before that very good, as this year.
Let's give it at least half a season though before we start with the 'best in England' rhetoric.
He plays in a defence that generally sits back, is compact, and is well protected by the midfield. If he was in an especially offensive minded team that required him to get forward a lot more, then i would assume that his lack of pace would show him up.

Agree with all that... honestly I think there were good reasons he didn't get the England call last term, the armband was weighing heavy too. If he's still on this kind of form in the new year, hopefully it'll be obvious to anyone he should be back in the squad.

Plenty around him to do the fancy dan stuff. He a CB of the top quality. I for one don't want him to change, or be changed. Stick to what he's good at is enough.

Defenders are being selected for England before Ryan due to the teams they play for,not on form or ability.Being totally selfish not too bothered whether he gets picked or not, less matches for him to get injuries. IMHO up there with the best in the country.

His control and distribution ARE poor for what an international defender needs, as he demonstrated when he twatted the ball straight up in the air after about 80mins last night when he had time.
All the better for us though, because he fits us well. But anyway, that's why he doesn't get picked for England!

can't see him ever playing for England a bit like Smithy really. Decent defender for his age but needs to improve a lots more defensively. Cannot see his ball play, trapping, passing and distribution ever getting him near the england squad. Not in the same league as Jones, who oozes class. Future Cahill, Jones, Smalley well ahead.
