As an aside there's also a really interesting paragraph further down on Earl Barrett who has been put up as a classic example of why we need this Rooney Rule brought into football. I heard Jason Roberts banging on about him on 606 but the facts that Samuel quotes paint a slightly different picture. Earl Barrett is not qualified for the jobs he has not been able to get, nothing to do with the colour of his skin.

I'm also worried that all this hype will raise expectation, top 4 my arse! Top 10, a decent run in Europe and the FA Cup and I'll be delighted.

4th place and champions league football would be absolutely ace, but to be frank, if we finished 17th for the next 10 seasons, I'd be over the moon.

Maybe I just hold grudges too long but the **** that wrote this wrote a scathing attack on our current captain not so long ago, therefore I'll treat anything he writes as shite. He's just massaging our egos and stirring up expectations and setting us up for a fall. At which point he'll be like a pig in shit revelling in our misfortune. I find it a bit sad.
For three years, Stoke's approach has been admirable for many of the reasons Samuel outlines today.
We've been doing it the right way, and giving hope to all the average sized clubs in the Championship and below that you don't need an oil tycoon and Kevin Keegan as manager to break into the Premier League and compete with the best.
But for so long the media has overlooked all this and dubbed us a bunch of long-ball merchants, a stain on the glamour of the Premier League.
What has it taken to make them change their minds and accept what we're doing is admirable?
It's taken for us to pay way over the odds for a giant striker.

There are a lot of sports journalists oblique stroke media pundits *fingers/throat interface* who expected us to sink like a stone wearing concrete shoes and we haven't and now they've got no alternative but to view us differently, espousing the manager and players' virtues or they risk revealing themselves to being a bit cunty and wrong after all. Hullo Banksy.

Morning, Skip. Would like to dangle the carrot of a beer and match combo, but I'm still recovering from the strength of the swiss franc.

*Sigh* the standard of journalism sometimes is truly shocking. You honestly see more well thought out and well rounded articles on fan blogs.
Absolutely zero perspective. Just look at whats happening now. Man city and Man utd win a couple of games comfortably, cue the "they're better than barcelona and will both dominate the league" comments. Completely forgetting Chelsea started the season this way last year. Stoke start strong bloodying afew noses "Top 4 material". People were talking about Hull reaching the europa league after a strong start three years ago.
What I do take heart from is stoke fans don't seem to be getting caught up in this bullshit. Feet on ground lads and lasses. Sure we tend to punch above our weight but I think 17-14th is a reasonable expectation and would be OVER THE MOON with a top 10 finish. Anything more is wild hopes and dreams.
People are talking about how much we've spent, it pales in comparison to what the teams we are supposedly competing for 4th with have spent

I see what's happening here. The media are trying to kill us with kindness having realised that mocking us for our long ball game, ruthless tackles, was only uniting us further.
Place the emphasis on the fact that we should be challening for Europe and they think we'll be infighting by Christmas.

Never trust a man with a beard Hypocritical cunt appears on weekly 'Sunday Supplement' show on Sky Sports 1Yes, his Shawcross article was a well researched and accurate piece. "from 2007 when he broke the leg of Francis Jeffers of Sheffield Wednesday with a tackle from behind.
And, despite his previous with Jeffers, Shawcross does not seem a wicked sort; yet neither was Martin Taylor of Birmingham City
Kemp smart enough to predict that the challenge on Jeffers was not the last leg-breaking tackle in which Shawcross would be involved. And he is one of the good guys, apparently."
