Have just watched Ronaldo - Tested to the limit on Sky Sports 2 8-9pm, An excellent programme, its being shown again Sky Sports 1 @ 10pm, well worth a watch

Messi is the standout player in the greatest team on the planet. If you watched the two cup games to open the Spanish season then Messi was again the standout player. He is a class above anyone else currently, regardless of never playing in the premier league.
Ronaldo is a brilliant player, but Messi wins for me, plus he seems to perform better than Ronaldo in the big games.

I think the trouble with Ronaldo is that in a way he is quite one dimensional. If he comes up against a defender that can cope with his dribbling at pace and power, he's usually ineffective. Don't think he ever really got much change playing against Ashley Cole. I'm not saying his 'one dimension' isn't brilliant and devastating to most opposition, I just believe that Messi is a lot more capable of creating space, creating chances, and unlocking defences. I also think Messi is a better finisher.

Messi never played in England he is only proven at Spain. Ronaldo is proven in Both Spain and England . Ronaldo also smashed the record for most goals in Spain in a season on only his second season
Messi has the best midfielders in the world supporting him (Iniesta and Xavi) Ronaldo never had a world class midfield supporting him apart from xabi Alonso who is not even close to xavi and iniesta
Messi is also very Average for Argentina

Ronaldo is the best player in the world for me, I genuinely don't think Messi would be as effective in the Prem, he's not strong at all and isn't particularly deadly in the air either. Ronaldo ticks all the boxes, Messi is more unpredictable I'd say but then Ronaldo also has that lightning shot and free kick in his locker.
Ronaldo is the greater player in my opinion, I see Messi as an almost luxury player playing in the greatest team in the world.

Ronaldo's attitude and complete lack of sportsmanship prevents him from ever being treated as anything other than a good player who was also a complete and utter twat. He'll never be remembered fondly, or as a great. Hell, it's hard to give him praise in any way except through gritted teeth.
Plus, I've seen him play in the flesh twice and on both times he was (somehow) the worst player on the pitch by a distance.

I'm not sure that I'd compare Ronaldo and Messi, they play in fairly different teams and in different ways. I don't think that there's necessarily much of a difference when it comes to skill, so that the main differences are going to be in mental focus and tactics. I do agree that Messi probably couldn't do better than Ronaldo in the Premiership, though, and that Ronaldo does seem more impressive on an international level. While I used to dislike Ronaldo's attitude a fair bit, he does seem to have matured somewhat recently, and I don't mind him as much in general. Messi's also quite capable of acting like a git, so I'm not particularly inclined towards favouring him on that count.
I don't remember him being a stand-out player in the first game, certainly. In any case, when Madrid actually played a tactical game, especially when Pepe was in the middle and playing between the lines, Messi was quite frequently underwhelming.
In any case, the documentary sounds like it could be pretty interesting, so I'll try to watch it at some point if possible. Did the people involved in the testing learn much of interest from it?

So one minute you are making the point that Messi has the benefit of the Barcelona TEAM behind him so presumably you're very much of the opinion that it is the qualities of the players around an individual that affect their quality. But in the very next sentence you are making the exact opposite point that he is average for an Argentina team. You either think it's a team game or you don't??
And I don't recall Ronaldo setting the world alight when he's been playing for Portugal either.

Ronaldo makes constant stupid, selfish decisions in games, especially in the bigger ones, where he goes for constant speculative efforts that fly miles off target and give the opposition the ball back. You never get any of that shit from Messi, who is a magnificent team player. There's something a little bit arrogant about the "he hasn't done it in the Prem" argument, especially when it's followed often without basis with statements like "the likes of Real Zaragoza have Div 2 standard defences". It's a total March4 argument. He doesn't seem to have many problems scoring against English teams in Europe does he?

I don't know, in between barging into players, gesturing at the opposition bench and kicking the ball hard at the opposition fans when Pepe was closing him down, I'm a bit sceptical about the whole Messi brand, which seems more a creation of marketing than a reality. This especially given that he's a Barcelona player, and they are among other things masters of assaulting the referee in numbers, which isn't quite the apotheosis of contentment. Ronaldo is still probably not quite a saint, although he doesn't seem to be nearly as much a nuisance as he was at some points in his United tenure, but I'm not sure I'd see much reason to give Messi any clear favour in this area.
