I'm sure it's because west ham are a massive club! Or maybe it's..... Money is most probably the main incentive for any player, but it could be guaranteed game time with WHU which he most probably isn't guaranteed at Stoke.

With so many games he will play surely, with an extra 6 games at least, and the cup games.

There was talk of it but it hasn't been announced yet. I don't think he deserves it with having 2 years left on his current one. Needs to do more this season. 6 months ago we'd have driven him to his next club! True, bayern, I'd forgotten how low he'd sunk last winter - he really came good in the end. Hopefully he can hold that form and stay in the squad. Yes, go back to the last window and a lot of people were saying they would be happy to see him go. But then he came good in the 2nd half of the season again and rediscovered his form. I really would like to see him stay, apart from the need for extra bodies in the squad etc I think he will be good alongside a better player like Palacios. I think its what he needs, having someone of that higher quality alongside him. Also i thought part of the reason the Thun game went so well was that our midfield absolutely bossed the game.

Wouldn't say he's had a cracking start to the season, tbh I think he's been a bit crap. That's very harsh !

Have to agree with most posts we need 5 quality midfielders, so unless better is on the way, then it pointless.

Whelan has been excellent since getting back into the side in March. Anyone who says any different surely has a pre-conceived idea of a player and is unwilling to flinch no matter what.
If Whelan is crap, I dread to think what that makes Dean Whitehead who is truly dreadful in comparison.
There is nowt wrong with Whelan. He is playing well, and without him we wouldn't have got the point at Norwich. When everyone else's legs were failing them, Whelan continually drove us forward.
As for Wilson in midfield, anyone who thinks he is a midfielder has seen far more in him than I have. He is ponderous and one paced and his performances in midfield have been nothing short of very poor.

Amazes me that some are saying "get rid". Whelan has gradually established himself and now looks the part. He's another of the links to the side that came up and as far as I am concerned it's vital we keep them together as much as possible. It's what Stoke are about.

Some fans want 2 much. Whelan was a difference player 2nd half of last season and has continued that form this time. Before that he wasn't good enough but seems to have totally changed his game winning position when required and keeping it simple. As mentioned their are many players in our squad poorer than him.

Agree - he's playing some of his best football over the last half of the last season. I would have him in the '1st XI' with Palacios (... pending obviously...) We have no need to sell, and it also doesn't make sense for him (other than wages) to drop down to the Championship - as Robbie Savage said on 606 after the Chelsea game, he completely regreted dropping out of the Prem as it's doubly hard to get back to the same level. If Whelan goes to West Ham, as soon as they get promoted I can see them buying somebody to replace him.
What I could see happening is waiting till January and seeing if we're still in Europe plus domestic cups.

Dave, I agree ref Wilson, but he's only young and will improve. He can pass 2 and doesn't shrink a tackle. Don't forget he is playing LB which really isn't his position and has done ok, definately better than Mr Collins.

We have got one two surplus to requirements but Whelan is definitely not one of them!
Unless we're gonna bring Palacios and another, then we need to keep him.

am i the only person that rates whelan? i think he'll play a major part in our european games. i thought he was class against thun and split his passing can be off at times but his work rate when closing players down is brilliant

I wonder Whitehead thinks of this Palacios news. He's got to be looking over his shoulder now? Losing him and Whelan if we could get 2 in really wouldn't bother me in the slightest. but that then leaves with a paper thin squad again.. Our need is to improve the quality on the pitch and then have players such as whelan and whitehead as back up.

Amongst everything else, the article also mentioned us in for Cameron Jerome (thought that one was dead and buried) and still linked us as a possible destination for SWP.
On a totally separate and irrelevant point, I reckon Trappatoni will be at The Hawthornes looking at Glen, Walters and Wilson (isn't he Irish?). He was at Villa Park yesterday, so it would make sense to stay in the area for two games in two days.

Palacios (I hope) Whelan Rory Whitehead Wilson
None of the above should be sold unless we get in more than 1 CM. Give them Tongue or Pugh, get them off the wage bill.

I'm always wary of people that use the term "cracking", but he has had a decent start to the season. I can't see him going unless TP has acquired a left back.

Have missed that 'cracking start' that he's had. Has been completely average.
Problem is we lack numbers drastically in the middle of the park.
If we can bring in say Palacios and one other maybe then wouldn't think twice about letting him go. He isn't much good at all at Prem level.

The problem for our midfield is that our team is based on defence and wings and big forwards. I'm not saying that's a bad thing but it leaves a huge area of the ground for Whelan/Delap/Whitehead to cover especially as there's always a defensive priority.
It works for us but I think that's why midfielders like Whelan and Whitehead get so much stick - they have loads of work to do. I'm sure TP likes them because they do what they're told

www.thisisstaffordshire.co.uk/story-13224618-detail/story.htmlPalacios, pictured below, who cost Spurs £12m from Wigan in January 2009, would add passing ability and energy to Stoke's midfield.
His arrival would also leave Pulis with the option of allowing West Ham boss Sam Allardyce to pursue his interest in Glenn Whelan.

Would rather lose Whitehead, Diao, Soares, Tonge or even Delap than Whelan who is still mid 20's and has been a big asset this season.
