Seriously I remember wondering what it had come to that we had to sign our strikers from Bristol Rovers when we had been brought up on John Ritchie and Jimmy Greenhoff.
In fairness Paul Randall starting really well for us but then tailed off badly. Actually, little did we know it, but even worse strikers than Paul Randall were to follow.
Oh, and his 70's porn stars mustache of course
NB Not sure you are staring a best-seller in the face with this one but perhaps there is a niche market amongst the gas-heads for a Paul Randall special.

I doubt it, his spelling and grammar is spot on for a writer from what I can tell.

To be honest, i'd rather read the stories of a player like Randall than Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard etc after every major tournament. autobiographys of lesser known players are more often than not a lot more entertaining!

Great perm and tache. I think my older brother styled himself with the 'Randall' look! I seem to remember him scoring both goals when we beat Liverpool in the early 80's.

I remember it was quite an exciting signing in its day. The player himself always looked a wee bit 'delicate' for some of the tackling that used to fly about in the league back then but he did ok for us.

Could have been his debut too , any way. Rounded parkes though 6 inches of mud in the boothen e.d goal area and Barry Davis commentator gettin very excited " randalls in here RANDALLS IN HERE then sayin the score one of my fav games from late 70s ...

Many thanks . I'm sure Paul will be delighted to know he was so well thought of . Ok, I'll try to do a bit better !!¬ Randall played 20 times for us in our 2nd division promo season in 78/79 after a £150,000 move from Bristol Rovers in the January and scored 5 times. In fact Garth Crooks moved to the left to accommodate the perma-tanned, mustachioed newcomer. I think the most memorable Randall moment of that season would be when he scored a late 2nd goal in a 2-0 win over West Ham, skipping round Phil Parkes for a goal which sealed the victory in front of our biggest crowd of the season of 25,000. I actually remember a very nice piece looking back on that game in the Oatcake fanzine in the last couple of years which would be well worth you looking up not sure how you would get a copy though. Smudge or DaveF on here may be able to help. Randall also played in the last game of that season where a 1-0 victory over Notts County at Meadow lane sealed promotion. There is a huge long thread on that game on this message board if you look on the "Those Were The Days" Board and called "Meadow Lane 1979" and you may find some Randall related stuff on there. Randall only played for us 12 times the following season in the top flight and 6 times the season after that and then he was gone. So he probably only played 40 times for us in total. Cheers.

When we signed him we had high expectations of him as he had scored prolifically for Bristol Rovers. He never lived up to his early potential with us I don't think and we sold him back to Bristol Rovers (for a considerable loss as I remember). When we bought him we had just gained promotion to old Div 1 whereas Bristol Rovers were Div 2. When He went back to Bristol they had been relegated to Div 3 and he picked up on his previous form. Think Paul found his level in 2nd/3rd tier football but Div 1 was a step too far (still same these days with one or two exceptions)

Here is another thought.
Alan Durban permitted Randall to return to Rovers for 55K after paying 155K partly because a return of 6 goals in 51 games was not good enough but also because of the emergence of Lee Chapman.
(Didn't the Rovers fans have a whip-round to pay part of his fee !!??)
Of course Chapman went on to score 30 goals in Leeds United's title winning season and married Leslie Ash.
I believe both Lee and Leslie are suing the News of The World in the recent phone hacking scandal in an opportunistic strike to get some free money.
So there is your celebrity/current affairs angle !

I remember at Burnley he sored from an unbelievable angle to put us 3-0 up. There was a massive mental and someone threw a flask which hit this bloke in front of us on the back of the head. Remember it well. Loved those trips to Burnley - nice friendly bunch up there!!

Hang on are we missing the obvious here ? Was it not Randall who sent in the cross for Richardson's last minute winner at Notts County to seal promotion in 1979 ? That's how I remember it anyway

Did NOT score on his debut, took about 2 months until he broke his duck with a sitter away at Burnley, his first home goal ( of few ) came against West Ham in the game you refer to, except it was John Motson not Barry Davies who was commentating Durban signed him because the one thing that was going to stop promotion was the lack of goals from Crooks / O'Callaghan His actual debut was on 30th or 31st decemebr against Notts County Once we got promoted he was out of his league ( no pun intended ) Very lightweight, had loads of pace and not a lot else. went back to Bristol Rovers, and then to Yeovil ( missed a sitter in a Cup game against league opposition on MOTD ) and is now a pharmacist somewhere in Somerset

In that 80/81 season where he only played 6 times and scored 2 goals the fact that the 2 goals were in a 2-2 draw with Liverpool and a 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford means he will ever have a place in Sokies hearts !

I think the Burnley game involving the flask incident was actually the FA Cup game in 1980 when Kevin Mcnally sent off Ray Evans and Deniis Smith. as I recall Dennis Smith was sent off for time wasting even though we were losing!! The old Stokie next to me, who was about one of the only Stokies there that wasn't kitted out for aggro went mental and launched his flask at the pitch. Unfortunately, it didn't quite make it and twatted some poor Stokie on the back of the head.

He did put over the cross for the winning goal in 1979. From my memory we had a free kick near the halfway line near the dugouts. Durban appeared in his sheepskin coat and shouted that we needed to score. We took a short free kick and played it to Randall who went down the left, got to the byline , crossed deep to beyond the far post where Big Bren headed the ball back across goal into the six yard area where Ricco met the ball with a diving header. I saw the back of the net bulge and the place went mental. ;D ;D ;D One of the best days ever.

When he first came up, Paul R lodged with the parents of a friend of mine. One Friday evening a group of us (teenagers) trooped into the friend's living room to gawp at him - a real live (6 figure price tag) professional footballer. He was slumped in front of ATV Today (or similar), quite possibly eating his tea of fish fingers, chips and beans. We tried, in a hopelessly foot-shuffling manner, to engage him in "conversation", which amounted to "Hope you score tomorrow, Paul".
If tumbleweed makes a noise as it blows down a street, then that was the sound that followed.
It was also understood by me and my friends that he had "been out with" or was perhaps at that time in fact "seeing" one of the Nolan sisters. Whether that was actually the case, and (if so) which sister it was, I cannot say. I like to think that it was all of them, on a revolving door basis - and that he insisted on their singing "Attention to Me" whilst pursuing his romantic activities. It was undoubtedly one of their better hits.

Rabbigan, you've lost all credibility now, but you were nearly right - 'full' is the only word that ends with f-u-l-l
