Liverpool sign Crewe Alexandra teenager Dan SmithLiverpool have signed highly rated Crewe Alexandra youngster Dan Smith for a fee in the region of £300,000. Midfielder Smith, 16, had been poised to move to Manchester City, only for the move to fall through last month. The fee for Smith, who is yet to appear for Alex, will rise depending on first-team appearances for the Reds. He will follow Danny Murphy and Rob Jones, who enjoyed successful careers at Liverpool after making the short move from Crewe. Smith was recruited to the Crewe Academy at the age of 11, and attracted a number of Premier League scouts as he progressed through the ranks. The move will also offer financial relief for Alex, whose academy runs at a cost of £500,000 per year. Chairman John Bowler revealed earlier in April he remains confident of the club's financial future, despite posting losses of nearly £1m. He stated his belief that the club can continue to produce young players to move forward on and off the pitch. "The only time when you get anxious is if you know you haven't got the young players coming through, but we have," Bowler told BBC Radio Stoke. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/17755809

He was with us for a time wasn't he KE? I thought he'd been at Crewe Academy for a five or six years. Crewe to Liverpool looks like a no-brainer, but the reality could be very different for him (which I hope it's not). It just shows that local talent is out there, if club scouting looks for them.

Stoke to Liverpool should be a no brainier unless you are a brainless twat like me! Never mind, move on.

Me too then, as I remember the three times a week drive Crewe to Kirby and back to attend training sessions and back there for games at the weekend, home or away! (& the M6 over the canal was reduced to one carriageway). Why didn't they sign the Smith lad and leave him at Crewe for another year or so?

Great result today for the academy this morning, man city needed to beat us to win the league, we won 4-1 and Scott scored a screamer from 30 yards!

Anyone any ideas as to when retained list of 2nd year scholars is to be released. Seems later this season Perhaps we aren't releasing any. We need a few bodies to make up an u21 squad which is a qualifying necessity for Grade 1 staus in the revised academy structures that come into play next season. It is also a desirable in the one of my (TP's) pals needs a job stakes.

Watching the Southend v Crewe game was a lesson for all clubs in the value of youth, looked at as a long-term resource investment & development programme for bringing young players through and selling them on.
Dario had seemingly lost his way with it, but it seems the Steve Holland foundations are being continued with Neil Baker and Steve Davis.

Says on official website we have offered 10 youngsters a 1 yr development deal to play in the new u21 team. Why not offer them a 2 or 3 yr deal and actually make it worth there while?

Just found out my lads team have Stoke pre season from 9s to 16s. It'll be interesting to see how it goes. I was dissapointed with Stoke 2 years ago but a lot of investment in players, coaches etc since then so I would hope to see a big improvement.
On the Blackburn front, a mate of mine is the youth team assistant manager, they have a good set up there but have also spent serious money buying up players in the 9-14 age bracket over the last few years. Only last year they paid big money for a 9 and 11 from Crewe.
Probably won't be able to keep it going now they have gone down.

Hope our investment in youth brings us similar talents. Investment is only one part of the equation, the philosophy is just as or more important. One of the reasons I chose the current club for my lad, turning down 2 clubs in far higher league's, is that his current club have a proven track record of putting kids through into the reserves/1st team and selling them on. Some parents will just go for the badge and the Premier League status but many will be more discerning. Crewe have a far better track record than Stoke of moving players through, given the choice if I was still living at home I would chose Crewe over Stoke.

I would assume that with the upcoming changes to the Academy system, Crewe won't be producing talent for much longer?
