Have to go for "Elite" and its better sequel as the best. Utterly genre-busting at the time, and all space combat games since are basically just extensions of it.
Honourable mentions too to Manic Miner, Lords of Midnight (Unbeleivably complex for a Spectrum Game) and my all time favourite arcade game Pengo.
Have to also give credit to Mario World/Super Mario World which redefined the platform game, much more so than Sonic.

Blimey that brings back memories
I spent hour upon hours completing lords of midnight. Sending all recruits down to the Citadel of Xarjorkith if think it was called any on it was the most furthest south citadel.
Siliveril Blood Kumar Shububkins ?????
Rick Dangerous needs a mention.
Abshair…. I used to play moonstone but I had a cracked copy which kept crashing so I couldn’t complete it! very good game!

Fuck 'redefining'. Mario is a joker, Sonic is God! ;D No, if the two were footballers Sonic would be Marc Goodfellow and Mario possibly Alan Hudson. Sonic never came close to Mario

... Lords of Midnight (Unbeleivably complex for a Spectrum Game)... Wonderful call on Lords of Midnight there Seth. An amazing game made all the more so because it came out on something like a spectrum. I wrote about a month of my life off trying to win the final victory and after several heartbreaking failures I finally managed it. It was the first PC/Video game I ever completed and yet it it turned out to be a huge disappointment. I wasn't exactly expecting fireworks, a ticker-tape parade and the freedom of the city but a colourful congratulatory screenwouldn't have gone unappreciated. Instead though all that popped up was a black screen with the words "Ushgarak has fallen, victory to The Free" in small white writing at the top! I wasn't sure whether it had all been worth the effort after that!? Still, a great game and one of many from Mike Singleton (I think?). Smudge PS ~ Glad we both agree about Elite too - another game that occupied far too much of my life - I once turned down a night out with the lads up Hanley because I was doing so well.... looking back I can scarcely believe that!

I'm in the Elite and Elite II camp here top top game . . wasted far to much of my teenage life play that!
Speedball 2 was a fantastic 2 player game . . me and my mate used to have to fantastic competitions on that.
Super Mario Kart is probably the newest 'classic' game around, alright graphics and sound but bloody amazing game play. They concentrate far too much on making flashy graphics these days and gameplay all to often takes a back seat.
Also R-Type in the arcade anyhow cos the conversion to Amiga and ST we shite! I must of spent a small bloody fortune on it! ;D
Jet Set Willy was a class game, but at the end of it all for me the one that stands out for not only destroy too many joysticks but also developing my unfeasibly large fore arms was Daley Thompsons Decathlon!!! Thrash that joystick side to side as fast as you can fun!!! ;D
ahhhhh them were the days!

Doom - the best in its day Medal of Honor + Call of Duty - both great But I don't think anything beats Half Life - until Half Life 2 comes out in the spring / summer.

saw the latest Sonic 3D game the other day, doesn't look like it's got too many good reviews, one of the main faults being because it's in 3D you've got no idea where you're landing or going half the time, as was the beauty with platforms.
Still play Daley Thompson on my PC Speccy Emulator, not the same without an old Kempston joystick though ;D

The best computer game i've ever played is Grand Theft Auto: Vice City but you can't beat the old retro games in terms of overall gameplay.
On the Sonic-Mario debate, i personally liked Sonic a lot more as the game was faster and more enjoyable than a slower, yet still good Mario.
Mario needs to lose some weight before he can contend with Sonic.
If they were both footballers i'd have to say: Sonic = Thierry Henry Mario = Neville Southall ;D

GTA3 and GTA Vice City probably both my favourite games of all time
However, honourable mentions for the following
James Pond Robocod - Amiga 600 - One of the first games I really played
Sonic - sega megadrive The one with knuckles in as well, that was a classic
Goldeneye - N64 Absolute classic, hours of fun on multiplayer
FIFA: World Cup 98 - N64 One of the best footy games, before they became too real, when you could get the ball, perform a barrage of skill moves and belt it into the net after a 60 yard run.
Unreal Tournament - PC I've never really been into the first person shooters on the pc, doom, quake, halflife etc. But the current demo of unreal tournament has me hooked at the momen.

Good on you, you're the first person I know who actually managed to finish it. Many near misses but never made it. Remember the sequel too Doomdark's revenge - even harder.

Games that have stood out for me over the years:
Pole Position - loved this on my old Atari
Sensible World of Soccer - had it on my Amiga and PC, still the best football game ever
Doom - brainless 3D blasting at it's original finest
Tie Fighter - I like Star Wars. I like space ships. I like being a bad guy. I like this.
Quake World Team Fortress - Quake was ok but this multiplayer mod was the dog's bollocks. Forget all the imitations of it on games like Half Life and Quake 3, the original thing was brilliant. Concussion jumping scouts, grenade jumping soldiers, engineer's with their bastard sentry guns, mental medics swinging their axe of health at you, psycho spamming pyromaniacs, the spy dressed in a dinner jacket, and a great community of players.
Star Wars Dark Forces 2, Jedi Knight - I like Star Wars. I like being a Jedi Knight.
Half Life - Just Triffic. Great action set pieces, great feeling of being involved in the story, great sound, and Gordon Freeman looks like what I would if I grew a goatee beard.
Counter-Strike - flawed, unbalanced, frusting as fuck, played by loads of immature dick heads. Far too addictive for it's own good. Earlier betas were the best days of this. I no longer play it, but 4 years ago I could do little else.
Knights of the Old Republic - I like Star Wars. I like buying my very own droid then going to slaughter a bunch of Sand People then freeing some Jawas then killing a dragon then flying to another planet then solving an crime then helping start a wookie freedom movement then manipulating twofeuding familys into self destruction then winning a swoop race then going bounty hunting then infiltrating a sith academy then escaping from a large space ship then pissing off an entire planet of fish people, all while taking over and/or saving the galaxy.

Only so I could see another ending. It was more fun being the bad guy, picking fights with everyone I came across, being rude, and taking over the galaxy.

cannon fodder was great.
sensi soccer was a great game, but at the end of the day, a simple 4-3-3 system with a fast central forward would rip apart any computer team. on sensible world of soccer management section, I regularly won matches by scores in the 20+ to 1 or 2 against.
play with TWO sets of wingers and one central striker in a 4-3-3 system, a good keeper (ed de goey) and fast central defenders and you were almost unbeatable. fast full backs....was gary kelly the fastest player on the game ? ...... easy. and make easy cash with a keeper bug.....easy easy easy

F1GP the original on the Amiga... another good call
Microprose did some great simulations and this was one of them, incredible detail for the time, and hardware ... spent many many hours on this very very hard to master , however the bugs init were great, no penalties for jumping chicanes.....the brave could knock 25 seconds off the lap record at hockenheim, but get it wrong and you fucked up the lap.

Pushover (Amiga 600) Sonic The Hedgehog (Mega Drive) Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Mega Drive) FIFA 95 (Mega Drive) Tetris (Game Boy) Super Mario Kart (SNES) Final Fantasy VII (Playstation) Brian Lara Cricket (Playstation) I wouldn't like to know the number of hours I've spent playing that lot. Good call on FIFA 95 & Brian Lara Cricket. You could score some right screamers on FIFA 95. I was king on that when me & me mates played it.

speedball 2 was absolute quality but bomberman AKA dynablaster on the amiga(5 player) was the most addictive. You could waste days playing this and just when you tried to get some shut eye some barsteward would press for another game.
I liked all the ultimate games on the spectrum, lunerjetpack etc and team17 always brought out quality. As for platform games Rainbow Island has never been surpassed
They don't make um like they used to

I was saying this to someone the other day , whos half my age. That games back in the 1980's & early 1990's more than made up for their inferior graphics with far better game play, and that many of todays games are in fact just old games re-hashed and brought upto date with better graphics.
thats not to say all modern games.....but some of them just have too many whistles and bells for their own good.
