If he was in charge and had spent the money which Mr Pulis had spent, we would have been up by now. The games that we have drawn would have been won. A Waddington team never knew when it was time to lay down and stop fighting!

ke, stating the obvious there my friend.
Waddo was a truly great manager and to even try to compare Him with the present incombent is almost sacrilege.

The thread was meant as an ironic comment on the Boscamp (sic) thread. But your comments are true.

It could be argued that Waddington had access to greater resources than Pulis or any other Stoke manager will ever have in the future. For example he had the acknowledged best goalie in the world (Banks) and replaced him with the best goalie in England (Shilton). He also was able to sign Alan Hudson who had a good shout of being at least one of the best players in the world at the time. Due to the way football has gone the luxury of signing these sorts of players will NEVER be an option to a Stoke manager now.

Waddington was able to bring those players in though because HE built the club into what it was in the early the mid-seventies. It wasn't handed to him on a plate.
If TP takes us up, then he'll reap the rewards of his success.

Waddington got to bring back Stanley Matthews, once a young star having come through the youth ranks. Pulis got to bring back Andy Griffin, once a young star having come through the youth ranks.
All the signs are there.

There is no legitimate comparison really BUT it does make me laugh when people talk about the tough and physical Pulis teams. Waddo's classic back 4 - Marsh, Smith, Bloor, Pejic -would have the current "wild bunch" shitting in their pants!

Davef, I'm not decrying Waddington's achievements - I was there and they were golden times. But there was also much more of a level playing field for clubs to say the least.
I do think it is fair to say that in those days managers of teams like Stoke had advantages in terms of the players they could bring in that will never be present again.
If Pulis takes us up he will reap the rewards but they will never include the remotest possibility of signing the best goalie and best midfielder in the world - those days are gone.

waddo wasnt a great "spender" of money really.
he seemed to like players in the twilight of their career ie eastham/dobing/hurst/ritchie[2nd time]
but its totally unfair to bring the name of the greatest manager we have ever had to wonder how he would fare today [tongue in cheek]
happy happy days

Peter Dobing was signed at the age of 24, hardly the twilight of his career.

People always look back with rose coloured spectacles.
There were times when Stoke fans literally chased waddo down the road.

There is absolutely no comparison between football today and the early 1960's when Waddo took over
Waddo transformed Stoke City FC from lowly placed, poorly-supported, second division club, that within 10 years was competing with Arsenal Everton Man U Leeds Liverpool etc etc
Waddos "trick" was to take players who were past their prime and get even more out of them until we went on the cup-runs 1970-72 where we generated enough money to buy in the best players around
I was there on the Boothen against WBA a few days after we sold Greenhoff to Man U and it was like a wake Only 15,000 turned up as opposed to the 30,000 we expected It was the beginning of the end for Waddo and one of the saddest days of my life.
A lot of Stoke fans NEVER forgave the board for forcing Waddo to sell Greenhoff and it destroyed him
ONE TONY WADDINGTON
THERE'S ONLY ONE TONY WADDINGTON

thats very true, but he came good in the end.
i look back on the days when we had a really decent team, and were up there with the best,
tinted specs maybe, but memories never die

Banks, Matthews, Waddington and Ritchie all deserve one for the service they gave our club. All world class.

You cannot even begin to compare TP and Waddo. Waddo built 4 squads over a period of 12 years at Stoke. The first squad of players were supposedly "over the hill has beens" that got us promotion to top flight in 63. He then built a second squad using many home grown players plus a handful of very handy signings including Vernon, Burrows & Setters. That squad more or less stayed together until late sixties. More home grown players came in the shape of Dodds, Smithy, Pejic plus others and he bought Banks plus some other low cost signings as the final pieces in his jig saw. This squad went on to cup success in the early seventies. His 4th squad was a mixture of this squad plus some massive signings including Hudson, Shilton and Salmons. This squad almost took the title then the Butler Street stand roof blew off, we had no insurance and the rest is history.
My point is that teams are built over several years and stayed together. These days a team is unlikely to last more than 1 season particularly in the championship where many teams rely on loanees.

Godo. So right! Pejic, Jackie Marsh. Smithy, Bluto, abley assisted by Mickey Bernard, and even Mahoney, make our defence ( midfield) toda, look like the ladies team, and that implies no disrespect to our current defence. And Banksy in goal..Oh, God, it's like a dream!
