Alan Durban rescued our club from the pits of dispair. He also provided the focus for a whole new bunch of fans to follow the team home and away.Alan Durbans Red and White Army had a better away following than we had under Waddo- a real sense of optimism amongest youths and young men who refused to believe our club was finished.....despite his reputation I always expected us to score away from home and expected us to have a shot at winning...the 3-1 win at Coventry was a great example of that, we were 3 up at half time and they looked demoralised. I was gutted when he left for Sunderland, and in my opinion we were never the same after and relegation in 1985- looking back on it was nailed on after he left as the decline was noticable at all levels- having said that the Thatcher recession also knocked the life out of the city and its support

Durban leaving was one of the key moments in Stoke City's decline that's for sure. There were so many contributing factors in the 1980s to the downward spiral. To blame it on a roof blowing off in 1976 is wide of the mark in my opinion.
