Has anyone got any good Ken Thompson memories. I was only a kid when he first played for us, seem to recall that he missed a penalty and that miss sent us down to the second division. But he was a great player, somewhat reminiscent of Robert Huth in some ways, those sliding tackles, particularly on a muddy pitch were something else. Many thought that he should have played for Scotland but never did. He was our captain throughout the 1950's and I thought the world of him.

I remember him well, played alongside bobby cairns, Ken Was The ball winner, Bobby Was The play maker. You are correct in saying that ken missed a penalty, It was against Derby County, I was at the boothen end, That day in the 1952/53 season. As an 11 year old it took me months to get over it.

And the club took 10 years to get over it didn't they ? I remember as a kid thinking 10 years out of the top flight was an awful long time ,little did I realise what was too come in the future !

Was Stoke's Pivot (Centre Half for our younger viewers) when I went my first match. Good steady player ,but by then he had he lost the penalty taking job to Bobby Cairns.

No P in his name it was Ken Thomson joined us from Aberdeen and proved he was the best central defender in the country, it was a disgrace he never got a scottish cap.

Started to watch him around 1955. One of my heroes, a fine centre half in the half back line of Cairns , Thomson and Sellars. We used to sing a song about him on the lines of Robin Hood. It was always Kenny Thomson and his band of men. Bobby Cairns took over the penalty taking but I do remember vividly Ted Burgin, the Sheffield United keeper saving a Cairns penalty at the Stoke end around 1957 and I think it was a draw. Wonderful memories
