yeah somtimes he's looked poor, but when he's good he's very good, so he balances it out.

Like jemma says, if you think Whelan or Diao there's no real question. He's shown plenty of flashes of quality but this is an unsettled side, under pressure, and if you're Whelan's kind of midfielder you've got to know who's around you week to week. All the same I'm a bit disappointed too tbh, so far anyhow.

I think that I have to agree with Spiderman, it's difficult to see the difference between Whelan and SJE, he is certainly not a box to box midfielder, which is what we needed, and I think Pugh plays better in central midfield.

I think that we have not been at our best since Whelan has arrived, but i expect the balance to be redressed soon now we have a natural left-sided midfielder.
Tony's picked us a good one there, i've no doubt.

You shouldn't agree with me you know, you'll all now be the subject of unsolicited personal abuse both on here and via the PM option. Oh and anyone that does have the temerity to agree with me will also be accused of being BBM, HG, Stokeyo, Nick (?) and anyone else that is commonly disliked for having a differing opinion.

Playing central midfield for us can't be a great place to demonstrate the full range of your abilities can it? i.e drop off to 30 yards from our own goal every time we lose the ball, don't get ahead of the ball just in case we lose the ball, somewhat limited off the ball movement around you and the regular requirement to sit back if we go a goal up etc etc Mr Pulis's tactical approach has never been "Let's get the ball down and play through central midfield" ihas it? From what I have seen of Whelan he has an excellent first touch and an eye for a pass. If we did try and play more controlled possession football I'm sure that Whelan's strengths would become even more apparent. Pulis has done very well to assemble what looks like a midfield 4 - Lawrence, Whelan, Delap and Pearson - that is the equal of any in the division. I just wish he knew how to utilise them fully. Spot on Godo the most sensible post on this thread. A good pal who is a massive Owls fan was absolutely gutted when Whelan joined us and said we were were getting a fabulous player. You have perfectly stated in your post why he has perhaps not been at his best. That midfield is the best in the division.

Whelan problem is we do not play 4 - 4 - 2 but 4 - 2 - 3 - 1 and he is stuck with playing as one of the two holding mid-fielders with Creswell, Mama and Lawernce as the attacking midfielders. As Whelan is an attacking cemtral midfielder he played out of position and hasn't been at his best
