Hmm. Not quite sure I would ever describe 1976-1978 as pretty good times.
It might have "turned out right in the end" in 1979, but the previous 2 years were pretty horrific.

It broke my heart when we were relegated after doing so well earlier in that decade. It has taken so long for us to get back and be a respected team in the top league again. This is probably why I have no time for the negative posters on the oatcake.

i was 13 in '76,but just as mad on stoke city as i am now. to me 1976-1979 bring back these memories....the stand blowing down, losing our best players, villa away,my school pals taking the piss the day after the villa match, manfield town away, spartans, watching smith, conroy and marsh on the footy show On the ball being interviewed about the cup defeat, being a member of the london stoke city branch, playing for the london supporters club and scoring against Rangers london branch in '79,my one and only goal goal ! the number 68 to euston to meet fellow stokies coming up for games, getting attacked by millwall fans on the train to notts co,they where at leicester city for their last game of '79 and being at notts co,greatest day of all .

You weren't on those 2 special train coaches that went to Notts County in 79 that the Millwalls fans went into were you? I enjoyed those times, a teenage lad, getting first wages and going to watch Stoke away with an adult was great

76 to 79, 76 I was twelve yrs old life in front of me, Stoke City and girls, what else could a young lad want, then one windy day the roof comes off my beloved Victoria Ground. Players start leaving Stoke, I'm on holiday in Majorca, me dad phones home and Stoke have sold GREENHOFF to Man u. Then shit happens, I was knocked over by a car on A34 on the 6th May 1978. Nearly died that night, stopped breathing twice but thanks to the North Staffs Hospital, Was still able to go the matches the next season with the aid of my father and uncle, even away.

In '76 I was in to Quo & Queen, by the end of '79 I was in to PIL, Joy Division, The Clash, The Jam & 2-Tone. Awesome times! And those away games - Cambridge, Notts County etc. Bloody brilliant.

Bloody hell 76 was ok until Greenhoff was sold then that was that, crap times thank god for Punk Rock a saviour. 1977 was for me one of the 4 years of football I would rather forget 77, 85, 90, and 98. When Greenhoff was sold, you may as well ripped my head off and shit down my throat, I was mortified. Then along came Durban and we became a fair team again and he was a good manager, then in 98 he tried really hard to safe us with 5 games remaining and another 2 games would have Im sure.

This was around the time I started to go to away games with my mates, some great days out with Tansy and about 30 others in the back of a Luton van, some of those lads were mental. Don't think i ever got over the sale of Sir Jimmy myself Anyone remember Charlton away in the FA cup? Be about 77/78, can't remember the score but there was a lot of shenanigans at the station after the game, and that terrace to the right of us at the Valley was probably the biggest I ever saw! My dear old Dad used to get us free tickets for the Vic most games, even tho' I was going through my rebellious years at the time, looking back I was an ungrateful bastard, like to think I made it up to him a bit after I joined the RN in '80 and saw a bit of sense. Notts county away has to be in the top 3 of anybodies away days, just awesome.

My first Stoke game at the tender age of 13 in '75. By 77/78 my parents started to let me go on the away day specials (Cattle trucks with no lights left by the end of the day if they had any to start with) . Going down to London and being fucking terrified. Thinking I'd get killed by the skin heads at the likes of West Ham and Chelsea. Crammed in the middle of the Boothan, getting crushed when we scored, not being able to speak after the match due to shouting and chain smoking 10 no 6. Underage drinking at the Terrace before the game and up the Tontine in the evening. Getting into trouble at Stoke graveyard and being grounded by the parents. Being gutted when games were cancelled due to fog, ice of rain. Walking down Hartshill seeing the old lights of the Boothen, hearing the noise and then up the steps into the Boothen. Checking how many away fans there were. The songs, the smell and the atmosphere. I never used to worry about playing the big teams at Stoke because I always believed we could win. And we weren't a bad side with some real characters in it. A wonderful time for a teenager.

I was up near the front of the train on my own, they were picking on quite a few people, and being big with the females on the train, didn't they break a lads fingers? I saw them get rounded up at Leicester by the police dogs as the train drew off.

Great and sad times those years i started going in 1970 and loved the waddo years (i was born in 61) the stand blowing off losing my fav stoke player of all time in greenhoff, relegation, blythe spartens, then the magic promotion season in 79, i never missed a match in the next 3 seasons although to be honest the last few months became a bind, id had enough of going just to keep the unbroken run going and would never go for the sake of it again, also at that time 1 was one of the founder members of the stoke supporters club in which nik mansfield became the secretary. To any moaning stoke fans 2day enjoy it whilst it lasts i remember 77 fans singing waddo out, enjoy pulis whilst he got the midas touch if you not careful oblivion can be just around the corner
