I think people should calm down and let things take their course ! As several people have said Sheff W WILL be punished and we WONT get the benefits of any punishment so lets just get on with collecting enough points in next 5 games to go up !!

We've drawn the short straw.
The infringement of the law allowed the Wendies to have options throughout the match, regardless as to how many actually entered the field of play.
Still, we deserved only a point and we shall only get the point.

lots & lots of precedents re ineligible players & various other law breakings throught UK football
decalring the match result null & void & declaring the result 3.0 to the wringed side is the standard punishment
anything else is a total fudge.
Weds are supposed to be a professional football club, even minor non-league sides would find themselves in trouble over such a basic error

Let me get this right. Some of you think Wednesday did it on purpose.
So, the thinking by Wednesday is this.
We'll break the rules cus about 15/20,000 thick fookers won't notice and we'll only get a £2,000 fine.

Let me get this right. Some of you think Wednesday did it on purpose. If they did it accidently then they have a MAJOR incompetence problem, i suppose it's possible, either way they should be severely dealt with and punished for it, handing us the 3pts would be a starter

Thats the long and the short of it mick, even their fans were talking on messageboards before hand about the 5 loanee rule, you cannot tell me that this supposed proffesional club did NOT know the rule existed , its not more than 18 months ago that Leeds got punished for it

If - and it is still an if I think - the FA do punish them, I presume it would be seen as more serious if it had been premeditated, than if it had been an error (however gobsmackingly incompetent). Analogous perhaps to the difference between murder and manslaughter. Difficult to prove intent though I suspect.

Dave, if they get a £2,000 fine, you're probably right. If they get their point deducted, you're probably wrong.

Apparently as soon as a thread goes on to a 13th page, the whole thing self-destructs.
So is it Post Number 361 that will get rid of the whole thread?

'we didn't lose points because of them using an illegal player'
We did in a way SIOCH - not sure what starving kids have to do with it
Negligence on Wednesday's part as we abided by the rules and not them. Sure the teams at the bottom will look at this if they get a smack on the wrist which I personally think they will. Imagine the legal wranglings if Wednesday got a point reduction and go down as a result etc

We know the outcome don't we? But nothing better to do this morning! Dear Sir I write to you in connection with the Sheffield Wednesday v Stoke City fixture played on Saturday afternoon (29.3.08) In a week where we have just passed the loan deadline, we were all aware that there is a maximum of five loanees allowed in the matchday squad. Adhering to the rules, Stoke City dropped Paul Gallagher and Gabriel Zakuani from the matchday 16 (on loan from Blackburn and Fulham respectively) Sheffield Wednesday named SIX loanees in there squad: Frank Songo'o (Portsmouth), Bartosz Slusarski (West Brom), Graham Kavanagh (Sunderland), Adam Bolder (QPR), Ben Sahar (Chelsea) and Enoch Showumni (Bristol City). This rule is common knowledge, indeed as happens up and down the land Stoke City fans predicted the starting XI in advance of this fixture, 100% of the predictions taking into account the 5 loan rule. Ignorance is no defence. Nor can it be argued that the fact all 6 players did not participate directly in the game be a factor to take into consideration. In this day and age it is a squad game. Sheffield Wednesday clearly take this into consideration as they saw fit to not include a goalkeeper in their 16. Preferring the have the extra outfield options, either to introduce defenders to protect a lead, or to introduce attackers to chase a game - which they did successfully. An on loan attacker was introduced and another ineligible player scored the late equaliser. I suspect Stoke would then liked to have introduced a third substitute, the creative Paul Gallagher on loan from Blackburn, to chase 3 crucial points. He was sitting in the stands. Due to injury and suspension we only had 2 defenders and a goalkeeper remaining on the bench. I look forward to your decision. The Stoke v Leicester fixture on the final day of the season could be crucial at either end of the table. I would urge Stoke to field all 7 loan players, which would make us undoubtedly stronger, if a fine is the only penalty. Kind Regards

31/03/2008 - Waiting game Stoke City could be in line for a priceless two-point handout from the Football League if a landmark judgement rules in their favour. Sheffield Wednesday are in the dock after naming six on-loan players in their 16 against Stoke on Saturday when only five are permitted. Now the Football League has launched an inquiry into the apparent breach of their rules. Wednesday seem certain to face punishment - including a possible docking of their point from Saturday's 1-1 draw - but less certain is any recompense Stoke can anticipate as the infringement is almost without precedent. Stoke are keeping their powder dry for now by awaiting the League's ruling into Wednesday's extraordinary oversight. Stoke's chief executive Tony Scholes stated: "We went straight onto the League on Saturday evening when the situation first became known to us and they told us that the situation would be considered on Monday morning. "We are now waiting to see what emerges before deciding whether it is appropriate for us to consider any further action on the matter." Football League spokesman Jon Nagle added: "All we can say is that the team sheets from this game will be processed and analysed in due course and any necessary action will be considered when that has taken place." There is one precedent when Leeds were fined £2,000 after including six loanees in a Championship fixture at Burnley in November 2006. But, crucially perhaps, Leeds lost the game. The League's adjudication in this latest breach will reverberate throughout the entire Coca-Cola Championship because of the respective positions of Stoke and Wednesday at either end of the table. A re-match is unlikely because Stoke would lose out if they were beaten. Though one compromise would be for Stoke to keep their one point from Saturday and for the two clubs to replay the fixture for the remaining two points. Stoke's representation to any inquiry will include the fact they weakened their own hand on Saturday by omitting on-loan duo Paul Gallagher and Gabriel Zakuani to comply with League rules. The identity of Wednesday's second-half scorer - loanee Franck Songo'o from Portsmouth - will not go un-noticed either. Wednesday, who are declining to comment at present, will protest that not all six loanees were on the pitch on Saturday as hired hands Adam Bolder, from QPR, and Bartosz Slusarki (of West Bromwich Albion) remained on the bench throughout the 1-1 draw at Hillsborough. www.whydelilah.co.uk/news/Waiting-game16584534.aspx

I like that idea. However, I still feel Wednesday will get a fine, and that will be the end of the matter.

potters11,
That won't happen as in theory it provides Sheff Wed the chance to get two points - the teams at the bottom would not be happy.
