Whos going to score the goals that we desperatley need at the momment? Looking at the squad and recent performances I'm really struggling to see where they will come from. Even KJ only seems to be able to score with his head. Who else is going to chip in? I'm really worried because I just cant see any goals in this team at all.

Play your best 11 players from the first minute.
That means playing with Ethers and Pennant out wide. Wilson in the middle of the park and Tuncay and Jones up front with Fuller brought on with 30 mins remaining.

Wilson is definitely the best central midfielder at the club. He can pass, he gets his foot on the ball and looks for the right option. If he could hit a ball in terms of shooting opportunities then we'd have a fantastic player in the making but he's still young.
Whitehead is a trier. I don't rate him any higher than Delap now. After a season of watching him he offers us nothing more. Rory does the same work and yet gives us the throw which will create more chances in two games than Whitehead will in a season.
For me, this is the team on Tuesday night.
Bego Wilko-Huth-Faye-Collins Pennant-Wilson-Delap-Ethers Tuncay-Jones

Scoring goals isnt my main concern at the moment, the main concert has to be the daft goals we are shipping.
We have scored in 8 out of our 11 league games this season, and in those 3 we didn't score in, we had perfectly good goals disallowed in two ( Everton away and Sunderland away ) and the other game was at Stamford Bridge where we hit the cross-bar.

Midfield, especially our quick wingers Pennant......Delap.......Wilson.......Ethers deliver what's needed for the Carribean Duo ................Fuller...........Jones................... to score goals. Tunny to be brought on when Fuller's finished. Wilson needs a break - TP, please!!!

On Tuesday, Birminghams first will come from Zigic catching a corner and slam-dunking it into the net off the refs head. The ref will deny seeing anything. Their second will come when Begovic trips up taking a goal kick, after consulting the linesman the ref decides that Begovic was actually a Birmingham player and that he must have been fouled. He sends Collins off as he was the closest player and so must have commited the foul.
In the last minute we score a consolation after a breakaway and the ref playing advantage, but after the ball hits the net he pulls play back to the half way line and gives us a free kick instead.

All in all football is a combination of attacking (your so called tippy tappy) and defending, isn't it? This thread raises the question: "Where will the goals come from?" Your answer is: "... get back to defending as a team." OK! ???

Good post. Collins can't defend, Abdy is past it and Tuncay and Wilson are doing nothing to help the defence. I say we drop Jones as well and start playing Scotlands inspired 4-6-0 formation, only ideally with more central defenders. Now on a more serious note Tunch does his job of hastling defenders when he's played in the hole. Even when his touch isn't quite working the one thing you can't fault is his work rate. I think the main problem that I've seen, particularly at home, is that we aren't clinical enough. Side are willing to come at us now and take a point, so we've got to get better at breaking them down sides and taking the chances we make, rather than hitting the woodwork which seems to have become something of a specialty of ours. And to your other point March we're hardly playing like Barcelona, we still hammer the ball aimlessly over the top to keep you entertained surely?

Attacking is 'hoof, head, throw goal' and you can't defend against it easily.

Play your tallest centre halves, double mark Etherington, laugh at Delap when the ball is at his feet. Fairly easy really.

Goal against come first in most matches, especially when TP uses a defensive minded line up from start.... ??? You couldn't be more wrong. Our defensive stance last season led to us taking the lead in most games. We were then left hanging on. This season, we are more expansive and have gone in at half time a goal behind in every game but one.

In both games, nothing throws from the half-way line led to goals. Rory's throws remain the most potent set plays in the Prem.

I beg to differ - Newcastle goals from a corner and a free kick. and Wolves from a corner too. Your devotion to Delap is admirable but the idea that his throw ins made these goals takes your idea of an 'assist' to a ludicrous degree.

The thing that worries most is how uncomfortable we look on the ball even compared to the lesser teams in the PL. Our attacking is so disjointed it's no surprise that we aren't scoring at the moment. Yesterday showed how much we rely on Rory tossing the ball in. We created next to nothing from open play with the main reason being that the long ball is so easy to snuff out as it gives defenders time to get in position and knock the ball away.
