Well it seems the Official site weekly Academy preview lasted erm......one week!
Well the unofficial preview will have to step in :-)
Under 18s (and 16s) are at home to Liverpool on Saturday morning (ko 11am). This is the first all Group C encounter following the initial round of inter-group fixtures that kick off and end the Premier Academy League season.
It's going to be a toughie for Stoke"s youngsters as Liverpool have made a very good start to the season and have what looks like their strongest u18s squads for some time.
Players to watch in the Scousers ranks include winger Stirling, picked up for serious money from QPR last season and Michael Ngoo a six foot five centre forward brought from Southend last summer. They might also include goalkeeper Tyrell Belford. Belford, released by Coventry spent six weeks on trial at Stoke. Not considered good enough he found his way to Liverpool. No sooner had he signed for their 'respected' Academy he was chosen to represent England!
The Merseysiders will be skipperd by Conor Cody. Despite being a purely functional midfielder (a water carrier in Cantona speak) he captained the England u17 team that won the European Championships this summer.
Stoke are a side that will improve as the season progresses having been pretty much thrown together as a squad in the summer. First signs of improvement have been evident and tomorrow will be an early measure of that.

A fine mornings entertainment!
The u18s ended Liverpool's unbeaten start to the season with a one nil win courtesy of a penalty converted by Cameron Mitchell.
The u16s ran out comfortable 3..1 winners against the Scousers.

Cheers Mark. Cuvelier sounds very good from the little snippets I've read and seems to thread through some dangerous passes every game.
The Liverpool report is a thing of beauty! ;D

Brunt's a big lad, isn't he?
Still seems to be loads of building work going on around the site.

Thought it was a rugged defensive display; the big striker for Liverpool is named Michael Ngoo and they spent £250,000 to buy him from Southend; was on trial at Man Utd before joining them I believe.

I think that the key with the U18's is to look at them as work in progress as I am sure that MarkW said that a lot of the players in the team are relatively new, Liverpool I would imagine have been together for a while. Good win against quality opposition.

I was in Manchester at the weekend and happened to watch City v Utd u16s
There was a centre half playing for city who all of my friends thought was huge for an 18 year old, only after the match did we realise that we were watching the under 16s. Interestingly Andy Cole was there watching his son, who didn't do a great deal but there were some tidy little players in both of their ranks. If our lot come up against their kids at any point in the future I dont think we'll win a single header!

We play Man United as soon as a week on Saturday at Clayton Wood. The u18s and 16s will be in action and I can assure you our 16s will win most headers. They are fooking huge! As far as the highlights package on LTV is concerned don't forget it is their channel and the shoe horn in as much Liverpool action as they can. It isn't necessarily a good reflection of the game itself. For example our left winger ran their right back ragged throughout the game. From the highlights you wouldn't know he existed! ;D

Tuesday 5th October friendly game versus Cheltenham FC SoE at Clayton Wood That fixture is the regular Tuesday game primarily for the lads not getting a game on a Saturday and is therefore mainly first years, u16 and trialists. The game on Saturday was thrown away with less than a minute on the clock with some Keystone Kops stuff around our penalty area culminating in an own goal. Bolton were the better side in the first half but Stoke had them pinned in their own half all of the second period. Unfortunately the absence of Brunt and a lack of willingness to get on the end of a stream of crosses into their box meant a disappointing loss against top of the league Bolton. Bolton's coaching staff (Tony Zico Kelly and David Lee) were imploring them to see the game out as they hung on for dear life.

I know I'm always sticking up for the media team but it's worth pointing out there is just four of them, two of which take most of the workload, compared to other clubs that have teams of 8/9. I'll gladly take on any additional photo-bug/webscribing duties they need. ;D

A report on Saturdays game of sorts from the Bolton site is here. www.bwfc.co.uk/page/Academy/0,,1004~2174219,00.html It credits the goal to Dennis Irwin's son Liam but he scuffed an effort that was actually put in by one of our defenders.

Remember it was a game arranged for lads (1st years) who havent made the Saturday Premier Academy League squad and trialists. Our regular team would murder Cheltenham with respect to them.

I have to agree that the regular Stoke side should beat the Cheltenham youth team, however I was a little surprised when I was told that there were some of the first year lads in their team.
Like any game with fit and skilled players I suppose that "on the day".
