Durban, in his sheepskin coat, on the touchline. Urging them on and passing the message we needed a goal.
Total, numbed silence in the away end at the news from Wrexham.
Paul Randall getting to the left by-line and dinking a cross to the back post.
Big Bren rising and nodding it back across the face of goal.
Richardson rushing in and heading it in for THE winner.
A bit of a mental on all sides of the ground........just EVERYWHERE!..........and all over the pitch just minutes later
Happy Days!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

Good read that was block30row19. Doing that to Sunderland was sweet justice, because if you remember about six weeks before our home game against them was called off when they claimed that their team coach was stuck in snow at Buxton or somewhere (despite the fact that dozens of their supporters coaches had managed to find their way to the Vic). It also had naff all to do with a couple of suspensions they had as well. Anyway, surprise of surprises, when the match did take place they beat us 1-0 and a few days later our season looked to be in tatters when Blackburn beat us 2-1 at home as well. We managed to get over those defeats though and were unbeaten in our final eight games. The exact same run this season (5 wins and 3 draws) and nobody will be able to stop us. We also beat Sunderland at Roker Park davef. November that season. I remember it well as it was bonfire night !. I went on supporters coach that game. Only 2 went from Stoke. Remember getting into Sunderland and the Police escorted us straight to the ground but not before they walked us right past some of their pubs. As we walked past one pub i remember half the pub coming out to greet us singing "You'll wish you never came" Very intimidating, and it got worse as the night went on. We were put into a paddock with the Roker Roar to the left and the open end right next to us on the right. No segregation just a couple of cops standing near to us. Never saw much of the first half as i was to busy watching their idiots gathering one by one in front of us as not to be noticed by the coppers. Second half started and it was still 0 - 0. Thought i was the only one who noticed the numbers in front of us get bigger and bigger as they easily out numbered us by now and they kept looking back at us making throat slitting gestures to us. All we needed now was for Stoke to score and all hell would have broke loose. I was to young to die. I was always more a lover than a fighter coming from an Italian background and all that Anyway just as i thought that i was the only one shiting myself, a lad i had been talking to earlier from Leeds i think ! says to this copper behind have we got an escort back to the coach's to which the copper replied "if your big enough to come here your big enough to make your own way back" GULP ! Now that gulp was from me as the lad from Leeds started to take his jacket off and passing it to someone next to him stating "I've had enough of this" and promptly ran and jumped in among the Sunderland boys windmill's everywhere. WTF ! All hell breaks loose for a few minutes and to be fair the police sorted it pretty quickly considering. We now have a small circle of police around us, well 7 or 8 of them now ! Ah yes the game, was forgetting about the game. Not many minutes left now. If i remember right TC crossed right in front of us into the box. Must have been one of his last ever games for Stoke as the ball went over i remember thinking if this ends up in the back of the net we really are going home in a fucking ambulance ! I had seen it all before at the old Vic When the opposing team scored and the Boothen Shouted " paddock paddock sort em out" As a small group of away fans in the Boothen paddock awaited the inevitable. Now the tables seem to be turning. Anyway back to that cross. Guess what. You guessed it. Trust Stoke Only a minute or so to go and the ball is headed firmly in the back of the net Big Bren i think ??? Anyone ? Anyway as my mate went mental hugging me as did all around i could not help wondering what was about to happen. Final whistle blows and we have some real useful points in the bag. Think we may have gone top. Not sure was about 29 years ago ! As it was, the coppers stayed by us and kept us behind. A few Sunderland fans in the open end tried to cut the corner on the pitch to get at us but were soon set up on by the old bill. Then out of the blue the fireworks started. Literally. We spent the next 5 minutes dodging bangers as they threw them toward us as they left the ground. The ground was now empty and the coppers kept us back for probably 20 minutes or so, and yes we did get escorted back to the coach's but not before we had to stop once or twice on the way back as the coppers cleared side streets of Sunderland boys hanging around so to speak ! Finally on the coach i sat down relieved and felt i could finally relax and reflect on what was a great Stoke away victory. As we headed back to Stoke on the motorway i recall seeing the night sky filled with fireworks and rockets and thinking bring on the next game. And i still feel exactly the same today. Bring on Blackpool.

Once again a good read. " "I've had enough of this" and promptly ran and jumped in among the Sunderland boys windmill's everywhere. " Haha, made me chuckle

Sunderland's fate wasn't actually decided that Saturday afternoon. Stoke's win guaranteed us a promotion place but Sunderland were still in third place with Palace in fourth.
What a long week that must have been for the Mackems, waiting, wondering what was going to happen on the following Friday night.
As stated above, a crowd of 51,000+ turned up at Selhurst Park to see the Glaziers win and leapfrog both Stoke and Brighton to take the title.
I'm certainly pleased that these days all the final games MUST be played at the same time.
I do remember though that Coventry once benefitted from a bit of jiggery-pokery from one Jimmy Hill.
1976-77: The most controversial escape. Coventry, under Gordon Milne, and Bristol City faced each other in the final relegation decider. A draw would save both only if Sunderland lost the same night at Everton. The kick-off was delayed, supposedly because of congestion as 37,000 fans squeezed into Highfield Road. With Coventry struggling to hold on to a 2-2 draw, managing-director Jimmy Hill had the news of Sunderland's defeat flashed up on the scoreboard. For the last five minutes the teams played keep-ball to the cheers of the crowd. Sunderland's protest to the League fell on deaf ears.

As the final whistle went I ducked under the barrier, dummied a failing Copper and joined the Red and White army celebrating on the pitch, Before I left I grabbed a divot of earth from near the goal mouth from where Richardson had scored. The turf was jammed into my anorak pocket and cherished all the way home on the Basset's Bomber. Somewhere in Stone there is still a patch of grass that will be forever Meadow Lane '79.

Sunderland....
Top clash, seem to remember they'd appealed for fans to turn out to try to convince Cloughie he join them as manager , gate was 25,000 odd
yep big Bren got the winner..went up with a mate from birkenhead in his J reg mini , handful of stoke around so we went in the paddock to the right of the Roker End ..Bren scores late on and we go mental , then notice a huge mob trickling through the paddock towards us , fair play to the Mackems around us who were all much bigger and older , a couple lent us thier coates and when the lynch mob arrived told them there was no stokies around them and to F off .
Stayed in the ground almost as long as the Stokies as there was a huge group outside looking for us ( or so it felt ) Getting back to the car, without yelling and skipping around like excited school girls was one of the hardest things I'd ever done at the time
that game and loads like it over the years is one of the reasons why I say the huge followings that people hanker for and remember are great , and they are there's no denying it...but the small ones can be very very special too.

block30, I went that Sunderland game but went on the btrain, we didn't get there until about 3.20 pm, left kidsgrove at 09.30. We were shoved in that paddock next to the roker end and they were throwing bangers at us. long Journey back on the train as well, about 4 changes each direction. We had to chage at newcastle on the way back, there boys were happy at the station when we got there, congratulating us etc. Oh happy days, then you get married and have kids (buxton )

Scouse your right. Though we did take some massive followings away in the 70's we also took some real poor ones at places like Liverpool, Man Utd and Birmingham. These i find hard to explain really. Remember going to Anfield and losing 5-3 i was in the paddock to the left of the kop. Every time we scored ... well nothing much really. Apart from some annoying scousers hitting me and my mate across the back of the head with scarfs with knots in them ! That game was on Match of The Day. I remember some old scouse bloke say next to us .... They don't give up do they Stoke when we scored our third.

That is so true. I remember being at Old Trafford only a season or 2 after this promotion in 79. There were only about 1500 of us in a little cage like paddock in the Scoreboard End. We went 2-0 up through Randall and Chapman ( I think). Talk about a mental though - it was more like an orgy really!!
Sadly Shit came back to level it at 2-2 (Jordan and Macari?)

If we gained promotion before the Leicester game wouldn't it e great to honour those players that last earned us a place in the top flight of English Football.

I was in the paddock at that game at Roker. Have to say don't recall any bother. Remember Big Bren's goal very clearly, and the Mackems whinging like hell on the walk back into the town centre.
Can't remember much else about it, I thought the main group of Stoke fans were in the bottom corner of the open end to my right, but it's a long time ago and I may be wrong.
