in my opinion we were right to leave. In the 90`s we were a short sighted and frankly, skint, club. To be honest i think people in charge of the club back in those days would have made a balls up of re-developing the vic. We would have been stuck with a 22,000 all seater stadium with seats stuck onto old terracing in the paddocks and boothen end and maybe a brand new stand where the Butler Street was.

Maybe so Mickstupp but in terms of being closer to the town, pubs, local transport, i think we'd have been better to stay cos the town is dead without the club at its heart.

fair enough mate and no-one likes to see local business` struggle, however, I`m led to believe that the pubs in stoke are chocker nowadays on matchdays ?
I`ve got fond memories of the vic dont get me wrong, but for the club to grow and give us the best chance to be succesful as a club, we absoluteley had to move from the vic.

personally, i think we should have stayed at vic, look what west brom have done to their ground. we could have done that, our ground is such a trek, id love be able just leave pub at 3.00pm, cross over the road to the ground. the ground might look odd as an all seater, but it would have alot of charachter, and stoke would be alot busier. at the brit, its either a twenty minute trek, or you have to drive, get ripped off parking then wait an hour after the game get off car park.

iv tried that, always packed near the ground. dont get me wrong, i dont hate the brit, i just hate its location. looking behind the butler street, looks alot of space, they could have built a hige stand there.

i get what you mean but it's the way things are now.
grounds near the city are a rarity in the higher leagues.
reading this thread brought a thought to my mind. what about Stoke buying the ground and then when we decide to move on from the brit we can use that space.
however imagine trying to get planning permission for that.
what'd be best would be if some kind of memorial was built there. but that's unlikely.

sorry but if we had decided to stay we would have been left with a patch up, cheapo, stadium to take us into the 21st century.
West Brom have done a good job redeveloping the hawthornes granted but they have room to expand there and a little bit of cash from previous spells in the Premier league to build decent stands and maintain a reasonable capacity (26,000?)
OK we had a decade of struggle after moving, but we have a facility at the brit which offers us a better chance of progressing as a club. We also have the chance to increase and improve it as we go along, we couldnt do that at the old vic site. We were boxed in by housing on three sides and limited as to what we could do.

One of the biggest issues was the River Trent which ran under the corner of the Butler St Stand.

I bet that book doesn't include the old Vale ground in Hanley! I never got to go there before Vale moved - anyone on here ever been to a game there and can anyone remember what it was called?
For the benefit of younger Stokies I should explain that in my youth in the 50s and 60s it was common for Stokies and Vale fans to go to both grounds in alternate weeks.

agree sort of, the same people who built the brit would have made an almighty cock up of the Vic as well.
At least we still have the chance to rectify some of the errors made with the Brit

where do we start!! bad transport links, that gap between west stand and boothen end, looks awfull. The general look of the stadium is very tacky in my opinion, but i agree, it can be fixed, the brit wasnt a very nice place pre 08 too, under half full, no atmosphere. the good thing about the vic was, even when under half full, didnt look it. when i look at coventry now, even with 20k in there, it looks terrible

thats just a sympton of all seater stadium mate, not just new grounds. The atmosphere in an all seater half empty vic would be cack as well. As for corners, well, yes the gaping gap in the corner at the Brit is bad, but what about the derelict, shit hole in the Boothen/Butler corner at the Vic?

The Recreation Ground wasn't it Forner? Sounds familiar - I think you are right. If/when they eventually fill in the John Smiths/Boothen corner I think they should move the changing rooms and the tunnel to that corner. Much better to have the players coming out next to the Boothen.

I don't know if it is my connection but that link takes me to the Vale page but the table showing their grounds contains no information.
