... who the bloody hell is going to carry any kind of attacking impetus from our central midfield? Like him or hate him, it's as clear as day that Glenn is the best central midfielder at this football club and the only midfielder (depressingly) that can pass a football.
We're really, really struggling for quality and good performances at the moment, and with Glenn's suspension all the pressure is heaped upon Ethers to carry the entirety of our attacking impetus.

And who will replace him then? Whitehead? Yep. Whitehead and Lawrence is a better pairing than Whelan and Whitehead. I'd rather Lawrence than Whelan in pretty much any game.

I agree with Beardy, we miss Lawrence more than Whelan

A truly amazing set of responses.
We're clearly lacking Lawro, but to suggest the hopeless Whitehead (or Diao) are a patch on Whelan is astonishing. I despair.

There's always Pugh. Then again I would of replaced Dioa with Pugh months ago

If losing Whelan is the only way Liam can get back in the team then its a price worth paying. Will Liam get a game though, even with Salif and Whelan out. What chance a midfield of : Ethers Rory Whitehead Danny Pugh?

You obviously didnt watch the game today Whelan was shocking , delap and whitehead would do ok if lawrence or tuncay play on the right but we need to sign a decent midfield player soon

Got to agree, give me Lawrence on the right, Delap, Whitehead and Matty on the Left. Playing Matty on the Left and anyone but Liam on the right just means that the opposition just have to watch Matty and Hoofs down the middle. With Liam and Matty on the flanks with Tuncay and Fuller up front, we have enough attacking options to upset any defence.

mikeyb, watch football first and then tell me Whelan had a good game!! He had a shocker today And Diao and Whitehead had a stormer I suppose?! I did watch the game, and Glenn was the only player - as ever - actually attempting to pass the ball forwards. Playing in such a poor midfield is a thankless task. It's no coincidence that our best performance of the season (v Sunderland) was the only one to feature our strongest midfield: Lawro - Glenn - Rory - Ethers. When Whelan plays well the team plays well, and he was the stand-out player in that game.

I haven't seen anything to suggest that our best midfield isn't still Lawrence-Delap-Whelan-Etherington.
Mind you, I haven't seen anything to suggest that our best defence isn't still Wilkinson-Faye-Shawcross-Higginbotham.

True on both counts. £15m+ later, and our best team includes none of the new signings, except possibly Tuncay.

Having said that, with Danny Pugh on the fringe, he may feature if Liam is still out of favour, Ethers on the right with Pugh on the left (i say this as summat that may well happen, not summat i'd like to see happen bear in mind)

Liam - Delap - Whitehead - Ethers I'd be surprised if it was anything other than that. It would give a balance we've not really seen since the end of last season and certainly give us a chance to win the game.

But even if I did, you've mentioned two poor games. Two. Just how many poor games have Whitehead, Diao and Delap served up? In Whitehead and Diao's case, we're well into double figures. We're going to miss Whelan, as we always do when he's not in the team.
