calm down, it was voted by every gormless, publess little gloryhunting tw@ from lands End to John O'Groats. 'Proper' clued-up man yoo fans (and yes, there are some) were embarrassed as f*** he won the PFA last season and this award just shows what a shallow counry we now live in. I voted for Giggs. He deserved it. Grow up Bunny.

deserved it in 2009 based on.......? he was up against WORLD CHAMPIONS, a number far far more worthy, who get a fraction of his money/acclaim.
With respect, as immature as I undoubtedly am, I take offence at being told to grow up by those who actually vote in shite like SPOTY/X Factor/Strictly etc.

I think every one (including Giggs himself) was embarrassed he won it. I rather think that the fact that the X-Factor voting was run at the same time had an awful lot to do with it. It's no slight to Ryan Giggs - a fantastic career - but what he's achieved this year does not surpass any of the other contenders by any stretch of the imagination. A world champion racing driver, heavyweight champion of the boxing world, Britain's youngest ever gold medalist, the world's fastes cyclist.......................and the award goes to the bloke who's feat this year was to play football at 35.............................it's a mockery of the thing.

It is a pretty 'sad' hobby. Giggs, still at the top of his game after all these years, arguably last year he was as good as ever, and that alone deserves the acclaim alongside the other 9 champions on display this evening. I also tend to vote alongside the 'personality' side of things, and Giggs is a superb role-model for any young sportsperson. As for your comment re: voting, what business is that of yours? Take those anti-Man Utd specs off, and you might actually be surprised what you see.

What's Giggs done in 2009 to win it? Didn't realize that 2009 means a LIFETIMES acheivement--Fix, bet all those 000's of crappy, jappy fans from down South phoned in.

What an utter joke. I wanted Mark Cavendish to win it, he along with a few others reserved it more than Giggs, no doubt he's a top footballer but he should have had a lifetime achievement award.

Seve not being fit to turn out doesn't sound a good sign, does it? Perhaps he just couldn't be arsed?

He's just getting over major surgery and perhaps he couldn't be arsed to jet over to Sheffield and pick up a bauble.
It doesn't mean he's on death's door- how many Americans can be bothered to attend the BAFTAs to pick up awards?

You must have missed the bit where they said he didn't come on doctor's advice, that's what worried me. And he did look frail.

I'm glad Giggs won. I would always prefer a footballer to win it and he's a worthy recipient.

They should have removed any reference to "personality" the year that Nigel Mansell, a man whose moustache has more character than him, won it.
Sports Person of the Year seems more accurate description.

Unfortunately, that post is rather negated by the fact that I've written two articles for United We Stand - the best-selling and probably best fanzine this country has ever produced - in the last few months and have another one in their next issue (they like a view from the sticks on general football, Manchester shopping and bars etc). I'm also in weekly contact with Andy Mitten (the editor) who has written some of the best football books/articles of the last decade.
As for many Stokies, Manchester is a cracking city, it's just the JCL's and gloryhunters I dislike.
No, I don't like United, but have massive respect to their local, loyal Mancunian support- without doubt some of the best support anywhere. Witness their Euro aways (and Barnsley, apart from the tools that did all the damage!!!) witnessed by thousands of their proper fans who follow them all over the shop.
The clue is in the title Sports Personality of the YEAR. Over a career, yes Giggs has been more than worthy, but this isn't a lifetime achievement award, so once again, I feel that answres another part of your argument.

I've only heard Giggs speak a couple of times and to be honest he sounds like a Dullard. It's great that as a professional footballer he keeps himself to himself but at the same time he hasn't got a personality!
Can't for one second knock what he has acheived but the fella is boring!
For me the one with the biggest personality is Haye - Added to the fact he's just become a World Champion then thats good enough!
Mind you I can't complain as I didn't vote

Sal-
Admittedly, SPOTY is not a show I can watch from start to finish, I tend to channel-hop when the sports I'm not particularly interested (ahem...golf) come on, so I did miss that.
Considering he's just getting over four major ops, I'd say it was pretty sound doctor's advice, and he is bound to look frail- it doesn't mean he's ill again, just recovering (fingers crossed).
