Huge stamina (like Wilson of Wizard fame lol) with a range of passing not seen at Stoke since the days of Zico The amount of effort Pulis put into landing Marc Wilson indicates to me that Pulis believes that he has a key long term player on his hands Years gone by Pulis had Salif Diao in the defensive midfield role and it looks like TP has at last found his replacement. Diao has been mocked in recent years but in his first spell with the club he acted as a shield in front of the back four picking up the ball and moving it on. It was said that Salif rarely lost the ball - which was true. However Salif wasn't over concerned if the recipient was hit - too many of his passes were short range and suicidal Wilson may well give us Diao's covering prowess but with a range of passing that gives the whole team options - he could well become our linchpin With two fast wide men and mobile strikers we may well have the formation that Pulis sees as a real progression from his cage set-up Exciting!

I'd like to see him and dean holding with pennant gudjohnsen and matty in front of them and kenwyne up front. Keep us tight at the back with flair, pace and power going forward.
Won't happen cos there's no Rory.

Really looking forward to seeing Wilson. Still very young and the one thing that the Pompy lads say is his best attribute is his short and long passing !!!!
Brazil, Wet Spam and Fulham were all after him so he could be quite a grab !!

A passing midfielder choosing Stoke over Brazil, West Ham and Fulham?
That can't be right.

He's the first Pulis signing that he's described as "elegant". Sounds a very un-Pulis-like quality!
Interesting signing, but we'll know more when we've seen him for a few months.
"He's a young age and comes with great flexibility," said Pulis, "because he can play full-back, centre-half or midfield. He's a good passer, a very elegant player and we're hoping his best years are ahead of him.
"It's important to bring in good, young professionals and when you look at the spine of our team, you see players like Marc, Asmir Begovic and Ryan Shawcross."

Pulis apparently wanted Ledley to play that DM role (they even have somewhat similar habitus!), fortunately Wilson is IMO much better player because of his passing, and also younger!

That is 'Zico' aka Tony Kelly - remember him? Our rotund midfielder of the 90's Obviously Wilson won't venture as far forward as Kelly - but if he can pass like him then we are in for a treat

i got a feeling that wilson will be like James O Connor was for us.
a horrible git in the midfield with an iron lung and putting in tackles, then picking the sensible pass.
i hope so

Long, maybe more accurate, balls from deep it sounds like. Not like Zico at all I suspect.

If he possesses a pair of eyes and legs (which from the Sky footage he seems to) I would bet he is a more accurate passer of a ball than Glenn Whelan.

Could be the player we needed someone who will pick up the ball in the middle and work it forward with decent passes.

I'm a Pompey fan. Obviously very disappointed to have lost Marc Wilson but very excited for him as he deserves to play in the Premiership. The way he handled his transfer was with the utmost dignity. He never once tried to indicate that he wanted to play a higher standard of football and tried to stay as loyal to the club as was allowed. Please be patient with him as he's still a young lad and inexperienced but he's definitely the real deal. I always feel more comfortable with him in midfield as he was a bit nervy at the back last season but have to admit that he's improved defensively this season. He has a knack of turning out of a tight situation which hasn't caught him out to date but BEWARE! Thanks for Lawrence and Kitson, they are desperately needed at Fratton Park but can the taxi driver please take Sonko and Dickinson on his way back? Good luck to Stoke this season - you've made some good signings this week which will start to have a true bearing on your season in the next few weeks. Keep up the great work of showing so-called bigger teams what true supporters are about. Play Up Pompey.

Paul, first of all don't get carried away too soon. You're prone to too much excitability and at your age that's dangerous!
Thanks for the input Cronen and sorry Dicko hasn't worked out, but like a few on here I think he's League 1 at best really. Kitson and Lawrence need to sort their heads out and apply themselves to Championship footy but if they do you've got two excellent players who could make the difference.

Josh is coming on soon also to give his opinion.
Cronen thanks for your post and sorry about SONKO !!!
Liam will do very well for you, take a look at the thread for him and you will see what we think of him. I think Kits will score goals also for you in the Champ !
Looking forward to seeing Wilson, we so need a passer !!!

Cronen,
Lawrence and Kitson will be amazing in the Championship, I expect them to atleast get 20-25 goals between them. As for Sonko and Dicko; Dickinson is still young and is very passionate for the game (the Barnsley fans loved him), Sonko is just truely awful, you may have the worst player in the leauge there.

Coggy also asked me to give a Pompey view on Wilson - he has been with the club for a number of years - out on loan a few times and despite a couple of appearances in 08/09 he came into the team properly last year due to the asset stripping which was gathering pace. He played initially where we needed cover; at centre back and looked fairly solid but was prone to make mistakes which most put down to inexperience. Personally I think it was because he wanted to play the ball around and take his time whereas what we needed was someone to just boot it out with he pressure we were under..
Later in the season he was switched into the centre of midfield and appeared to be a different player. He was composed, strong, creative and his passing was excellent - both short and especially long (I mean in a Glen Hoddle long ball way rather than a hoofer). Following on from the fire sale this summer most Pompey fans hoped the Championship team would be be built around Wilson - though saying that his form this season has not been quite as good, though we have had some pretty poor players playing and it is very early in the season. I would say that Pompey fans think we have got a good deal for Wilson - we are DESPERATE for a goalscorer to displace Nugent and see Kitson as a possible solution - similarly Lawrenece has had some great reviews and sounds like he could add the attacking flair we need.
All in all though I think Wilson will be a great addition for you - played in his favoured position and with some good movement from players around him I think he will shine and Will be a great asset to you for a number of years....though we said that to Man City fans when we sold them Lee Bradbury for a then considerable £3.5m in 1997 - he left a season later as "Lee Badbuy".
Good luck to you this season - you are a club very similar to Pompey - just make sure you don't fall into the trap we did of dodgy owners spending too much money they couldn't repay - Europe and the 5 Wembley visits and FA Cup win were fantastic but the whole Premiership experience has left a bad taste in the mouth for a lot of fans and has left a lot of us glad to be out of the crap away games, huge prices, numerous dodgy owners, administrators, cash driven players, no loyalty of managers, happy clappers and kick offs at stupid o'clock. That said with the squad we have not much chance of an early return, more likely a trip to Port Vale like the old days...

We are run by a chairman who supports the club through and through and the latest statistics say that we are the only club to have no debt in the premier league (excluding super-rich Chelsea and Man city) what-so-ever, where as you were run by a foreign chairman who knew nothing about football and over-spent behond his means

Excellent post and many thanks for coming on to give your view, Josh is also coming on soon so i thank you both. Our chairman is loaded and a lifelong Stoke fan so we are very fortunate in that area. Kits and especially Liam will do great for you ! Please keep us posted how they get on. The main part of Wilson i am excited about is his passing ! We so need a passer in our CM so hopefully he will come good for us. Again thanks for taking the time to come on and post.

I meant in terms of traditional support from working class base rather than sanitised premiership happy clappers. The Brittannia like Fratton Park is an asset because of the atmosphere that the home fans can generate. Was not making a comparison in terms of financial management - just saying you started in the Prem like us with a modest squad and after consolodation are starting to add some proper big names as we did. If your finances are being managed correctly and are not paying OTT wages and within your means then have nowt to worry about!
