I used to love the Manics back in "The Holy Bible" days, and thought "Everything Must Go" was great too.
Then I started gradually losing interest, as the albums just got blander and blander (although "lifeblood" was pretty good in parts) and i didn't even bother getting the last one. However, I've read a few reviews of the new album "Journal for plague Lovers" that are absolutely gushing in their praise of it. The story is that all the lyrics were written by Richey Edwards before he fucked off/topped himself and the remaining Manics have only just got round to putting them to music. (maybe they lost them down the cushions of the settee or something).
Anyway, this track certainly has a "Holy Bible" feel to it...

Generation terrorists is easily their best album for me. Saw them at the wulfrun hall in wolves 1991, a rip roaring show and they finished with a quality rendition of 'california uber alles' by dead kennedys. Also saw them at reading 91 in what was for me one of the greatest rock n roll performances ever. Everyone fucking hated them apart from the folk down the front and they played up to it big time. The manics were a hated band then, slowly they became accepted and for me the music suffered.

Is Richey really missing or was it an ideal chance for a sales boost??

went Uni with 2 of em - Rictchie and Nicky.
Nicky is a sound bloke, Ritchie a bit, er, tapped! Saw them countless times back in the day, and were superb live. Feel a bit like you Trousers: they started writing songs, unfortunately, and all energy and spark was sapped from them.
Not heard the new one, which might say as much about me as it does them.

Every song sounded the same to me, they could come out with a brand new song, play it without introduction on the radio, and even before lead vocals you'd know it was them

Manic Street Preachers - Best band ever! I've had Journal For Plague Lovers for a few weeks now, and its an addictively good album. Of course, don't take my word for it as I am a bit of a "Manics Obsessive" but its well worth a buy. Richey is definitely dead, if you listen to the lyrics of "Williams Last Words" on the new album its basically a suicide note. He was "sighted" in Fuerta Ventura back in 1999 as well as a few other countries but he's got to be dead. Can't wait to go and see them on June the 1st at Wolverhampton!!! My favourite album to listen to is actually Gold Against The Soul, but Holy Bible is definitely the best lyrics and music wise.

One of my favourite bands. Best live band I've ever seen, without doubt. Got this album the other day, but not had a real good listen to it yet. From what I have heard it sounds like their older stuff, which is a good thing.

Im a big Manics fan too, as everyone else said, GT and HB are immense, you could probably make 1 good album out of the rest. I liked Gold Against the Soul a more than the others, still cant believe they released it in between GT and HB, its like the eye of the storm.
Thanks for bringing this album to my attention as I have listened to the others to death and I gave up on them after the shit that was Lifeblood. Great live band as well.

I heard off someone who used to rehearse in the same place as the manics back in the early 90's that Richey was a bit of a twat, never spoke and seemed really arrogant, on the other hand though my mate Dave is the singer in The Beautiful South and when he's met them in the past he said that James Dean Bradfield is a dead down to earth guy and really friendly. They are complete legends though ever way. Also, if you're going to buy their new album then get it on vinyl as its been recorded in analogue by Steve Albini and it sounds awesome over a decent turntable

The manics were probably the best gig I saw. Glastonbury 94, just getting dark, so the lights were starting to have some effect, they came on to loads of green smoke, wearing 'terrorist' balaclavas with a freakin loud air raid siren going off then ripped into a set which sent the place mental.
Anyone else there for that? Think it was a Friday night and the rest of the weekend you'd hear people saying did you see the Manics on Friday?

So much hate for them (well, "non-love" anyway)! Couple of my mates absolutely loath them, and we're into roughly the same sort of stuff, I think it's James Dean Bradfields voice that puts a lot of people off

I think JDB has a great singing voice...you cant understand any of the lyrics but still. The fact that he can play some amazing solos whilst singing at the same time has always amazed me.

Holy Bible really is an excellent record, even if it is a fucking black hole. For me it's one of the few records that lasts the test of time, there are so many ideas in there that you get something new from it on every listen even after you've heard it dozens of times, yet it's still coherent and not just the entire unedited contents of a writer's notebook.
Never bought another of their albums after the holy bible, like the manics themselves say, they were a different band thereafter, can't see me buying the new one either really.
