Went on the Sheff Wednesdays forum today and asked them about their views on Marshall:
"We saw Chris Brunt develop here from an academy reject to a player who is one of the best in the Premiership at what he does. I would go as far as to say that Marshall has more potential than Brunt did when he was here.
He is very quick, he can go past defenders with ease and he has fantastic crossing ability with both feet- he can even deliver excellent crosses when he is running at full pelt which is normally the sign of an outstanding player for me.
On top of that, he is a genuine goal threat (4 goals in 19 appearances for us- he is worth at least a dozen goals a season at this level already i would guess) and works bloody hard as well. We haven't seen a second of prima donna bullsh*t from him all season which is great.
And above all else, he wins matches. Even in a couple of games when he has had an off game, he still quite often either scores a goal or gets an assist completely out of the blue. Which isn't a bad trait to have at all...
You have a real player on your hands, and i'm surprised you're letting us have him back. I saw Shotton playing in a wide role for you the other night and whilst he has a great long throw, Ben10 would offer you so, so much more. In fact Marshall even has a pretty handy long throw himself which has earnt us 5+ goals already this season."
" Marshall is terrific player, he really is, don't believe anyone saying it is just because he is playing at a lower level, you can tell the making of a good footballer and Marshall has all the ingriedients.
Quick of the ground, great determination, skill, quick feet, strength and great vision. The ball is glued to his feet when he has it, and he skips past players and leaves them for dead. also his crossing is brilliant, a traditional winger who can go to the by-line and swing one in.
Honestly one of the best players i've seen at Hillsborough for the past 10 years. I like to compare him to Chris Brunt and Glenn Whelan who we had at this level 5 or so years back, and he has made a much bigger impression than they did. Destined for a great future, and i can see him breaking into your first team next season without doubt. He is at a great age and will continue developing, fingers crossed he doesn't get a nasty injury, although he has recovered from a broken leg excellently, again showing the signs of a quality footballer.
You'd be mad to have sold him, and wish Ben all the luck in the future. No exaggeration i think he could be an England international at some point"
"premiership bound that lad"
And somebody compared him to Arjen Robben with the way he controls the ball.
Sounds like we have something special and he even has a long throw ;D

Got to get the lad back and try him out, surely a better option than a bloody right back playing on the wing!!

tbh, he may not be up to PL standard yet, but would to all those non believers, surely shotton isnt anywhere near up to PL standard on the wing? I think if you have pace, skill and determination to get past players. Don't see the harm in trying him out for a couple of games off the bench if we are in front comfortably

Cheers for that, mate.
Very encouraging comments there.
I can understand us allowing him to stay at Wednesday but I was hoping we might have found him a Championship club for the second half of the season to further aid his progress.
That said, he's clearly enjoying life there and he's playing in a team doing well which will boost his confidence.

He will have the pace and the confidence to run at defenders but looks like we won't see him until next season at the earliest.

I agree about the Championship club but i do think playing under a big crowd, chasing promotion and under a manager similar to Pulis will certainly help him improve as a player.

i have never seen him play. But going by that, it sounds like we have one of the most exciting prospects in the country on our hands, if what i have read is true. Lets test it out, bring him back in January and let him have a chance. Pulis only puts faith in young players on very rare occasions (Shawcross, Wilko (to an extent), Bego), but I hope he decides the risk is worth it because I am very excited by Marshall as a prospect for the future.

flblog.dailymail.co.uk/2011/12/talent-scout-ben-marshall.htmlAs an aside I may be being paranoid but the Mail always report that our players are on the verge of leaving for weeks they were convinced Sorenson would inevitably leave the club, they even reported it on the same day he renewed his contract with us. And with Marshall they reported numerous stories about him leaving too. Just seems weird that it is always the mail trying to paint a picture of gloom

Nothing weird about it. It's a shit rag with nothing accurate to report (and it employs Patrick Collins).

The article does fail to mention his new contract aside from that it's obviously a great read for Stoke fans. It is more the Sorenson stories that riled me, on a day all the papers reported on one of Sorros interviews saying he'd like to stay the mail spun it as he was definitely leaving. They reported that he was leaving on numerous occasions. Even on the day he signed they ran a story saying Pulis would need to find a new keeper in January. They're either crap journos or have an agenda.

Forget the first 99 percent of that post. HE EVEN HAS A LONG THROW! Get him back Tone! Now that is a Stoke quality! As a few Sheff Wed fans have said after watching the Villa game, he could do a better job for us that Shotts is doing .... we wont find out this season though. Shotts / Wilko RB Pen / Marshall RM Squad depth is vital and that seams a good right sided choice for me.

Maybe, just seems strange that none of the other papers reported it that way. Perhaps I'm having an Andre Villas Boas moment ;D

tbf, Arismendi has had a 'look in', albeit a small one - and his reviews whilst on loan were comparatively poor.
I can see the benefit of leaving him out on loan for the rest of the season, but next year he should be one of the 25. Cover for Ethers or Pennant by the sound of it. He could just be a hidden gem.....

Do you think Ben Marshall is the replacement for pennant?

Given the dates mentioned there, does anyone think TP sees Marshall as the back-up plan should he fail to sign wing cover in the window?
